UNAIR NEWS – Collapsing during exercise is an emergency that must get immediate aid precisely to avoid death. An expert in Cardiovascular Diseases, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga, Dr. Andrianto, explained the first aid that must be given to people who collapse during exercise.

“Collapsing during exercise demands immediate aid by people closest to the victim,” he explained.

First, we have to check the victim’s consciousness by calling the victim’s name or giving pain stimulation followed by checking the pulse and breath. “The pulse check is done by feeling the pulse on the neck as well as looking at, listening to, and feeling the victim’s breath,” explained Dr. Andrianto on Tuesday, June 15, 2021.

Second, if there is no response from the victim, the victim’s pulse is not palpable, and the victim is not breathing, make an emergency call immediately while providing basic life support to the victim. “Basic life support that can be provided by the rescuer is to maintain the airway for breathing circulation so that there is no blockage from the tongue that often falls. We do this by tilting the victim’s head upward, lifting the chin, and pushing the jaw,” he explained. After that, start chest compression and give breathing assistance from mouth to mouth or into the nose. If an automated external defibrillator is available, we can shock the heart back into action for cases of cardiac arrest due to heart rhythm disturbances. Basic life support must be provided until the emergency team arrives.

“Cardiac arrest can be reversible if it is treated within minutes, but if it is late (more than 4 to 6 minutes), the victim can die,” he said. The act of preventing cardiac arrest leading to death is called cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). “This assistance is given so that oxygen supply through blood circulation to the brain, heart and other important organs can keep working,” said Dr. Andrianto.

Dr. Andrianto advised the public to join basic life support training to improve their ability in providing assistance for an emergency situation. “Basic life support training organized by related professional associations should be followed by common people because it is very useful during emergencies that require immediate aid,” he concluded.
