UNAIR NEWS- Recently, the public was shocked by an event where some athletes suddenly fell unconscious during a sports activity. From a football competition, Christian Eriksen, Danish national midfielder, collapsed during a match against Finland at the EURO Cup 2020 on June 12, 2021.

Another incident happened when the Indonesian badminton team lost one of its brightest athletes, Markis Kido, on Monday, June 14, 2021, because of the same cause. Based on a statement made by Markis Kido’s sporting partner, who was at the scene, Kido suddenly fell unconscious in a badminton match.

Universitas Airlangga’s Faculty of Medicine expert on cardiovascular disease said that athletes may fall unconscious due to a disorder in various body systems such as the cardiovascular system, the central nervous system, or the respiratory system. “But the most common cause for the incident is the cardiovascular system,” said Dr. Andrianto, dr., SpJP (K) FIHA, FAsCC.

“Overall, the percentage of a collapse leading to a sudden death during or after sports activity is 5% higher for people aged 35 and over,” added Dr. Andrianto.

Coronary heart attack with heart rhythm disturbances become the most common cause of the incident. “From various reports, coronary heart attack accompanied by ventricular fibrillation or heart muscle spasm is the most common cause, and this incident reached 70 to 80%,” explained Dr. Andrianto

Factors that may cause a disturbance to the cardiovascular system mostly are a crust formation on the coronary arteries in the heart due to aging, family’s history of sudden death, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, and stress. Other factors are the genetic inheritance of heart rhythm and heart structure abnormality.

“The incident experienced by Christian Eriksen and Markis Kido is the same. In terms of Markis Kido’s incident, it is possible that the incident was caused by a sudden cardiac arrest that led to death,” concluded Dr. Andrianto.
