UNAIR NEWS – Many unsolved problems in clinics and health centers have inspired Prof. Dr. Ernie Maduratna Setiawatie, drg.,M.Kes.,Sp.Perio (K), one of the professors of the Faculty of Dental Medicine (FKG) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), to make an innovative product, ERYZOL. Those problems include lengthy healing of canker sores, shrinkage of gums after the flap surgery, and also the entry of bacteria after treatment.

ERYZOL is a dental gel made from Hyaluronan combined with metronidazole that works as an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and non-toxic gel. These materials can improve wound healing after dental and oral surgery. The research has passed various tests in its downstream process.

“This product’s prototype has been tested in vitro, in vivo, and clinically, so it is necessary to cooperate with pharmaceutical companies for large-scale clinical trials and mass production,” said Prof. Ernie.

The Faculty of Dental Medicine’s professor born in Malang added that ERYZOL innovation product could be applied locally with a syringe on the wound area. Although there are competitors for similar products, their products differ in terms of the material and concentration of metronidazole. Hyaluronan gel is thought to increase signaling molecules in the tissue regeneration process.

Prof. Ernie added that there is a need for collaboration with pharmaceutical factories for mass production at affordable prices, so many people get the benefits. Because, nowadays, the production is still imported at a relatively high price.

In her research, Prof. Ernie also created another product called fordontis mouthwash produced by PT. Konimex., and also dentolaser product in collaboration with PT. Sarandi.

According to her, Eryzol product can be included in the e-catalog so that all health centers can easily get them.

One of the best researchers from the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Universitas Airlangga, also provides various tips to get funding, starting from a problem in the field to produce a solution idea.

Furthermore, Prof Ernie said that applied research is easier to get funding. From an existing problem, then look for an efficient and effective solution.

“Through various in vitro, in vivo, and clinical trials. After finding the right formula, register the patent immediately, with empirical evidence through the results of years of research and patent,” said Prof Ernie.

“Besides, we are also looking for factories or companies which are willing to collaborate for its production. For consumers, in the future, this drug can be purchased at pharmacies,” she added.

As the best university in Indonesia, UNAIR continues to make innovations that can be useful in society. (*)
