UNAIR NEWS – Big Data is one of the terms often used in the era of industrial revolution 4.0. There is no definite definition of what big data really is.

Muhammad Noor Fakhruzzaman, S.Kom., M.Sc., a lecturer at Data Science Technology Program, Faculty of Advanced Technology and Multidiscipline(FTMM) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) revealed that he thinks big data is just a buzzword. Buzzword is an emerging or preexisting word that has become very popular for a period of time.

“In my opinion, Big Data is only a buzzword and there is no exact definition,” said the lecturer known well as Ruzza.

Furthermore, Ruzza said that if Big Data is really used, it will have potential for life which is more integrated or more harmonious. The use of Big Data will also make all aspects of life easier.

“A simple example, the use of Big Data in a smart city makes it possible to save electricity and fuel because the street CCTV data can be analyzed automatically by artificial intelligence to detect congestion,” he explained on Wednesday, March 17, 2021.

In processing Big Data, continued Ruzza, an important factor that must be considered is human resources. He said that a data-driven decision making culture is also important to implement because Big Data that has been processed will not be useful if decision making is not based on data.

Apart from Big Data, another term that is often discussed is master data. Ruzza explained that Big Data and master data are two different things. Master data, he added, is the main data or central data where the data is not necessarily classified as big data.

“An example of master data is central population data, usually the data is structured (neat, ed) and has a large size. However, it could be that the data is lack in terms of velocity (speed), variety (type), veracity (accuracy) or value so it cannot be categorized as big data,” he explained.

Responding to people who use Big Data term lately, Ruzza argued that the term is currently popular because it is related to the era of the industrial revolution 4.0. (*)
