This time we will get to know about various kinds of treatments for Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS). Some patients often experience burning and dry mouth complaints making them visit the dentist to relieve these symptoms. This condition has quite complex causes such as age, systemic disease and / or drug consumption. This condition most often occurs in patients aged 50 to 70, and the tendency to occur in women is higher than in men.

Some of the treatment options that are often given to patients with BMS can be Lidocaine Gel 2%. This drug is used as a local anesthetic in dentistry. When this drug is used, the distribution of impulses to the peripheral nerves is inhibited, so that it can effectively relieve pain in patients with neuropathic pain. Next, Benzydamine Hydrochloride 0.15%. This drug is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug which is also analgesic and antimicrobial in nature. This drug can relieve signs of discomfort or burning symptoms in BMS patients by decreasing the production of prostaglandins in the area of pain.

Not only that, there is also Aloe Vera Gel 70%. The gel from the aloe vera plant has many pharmacological functions such as antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-tumour and stimulates immunity. This drug has generally been used topically to treat multiple lesions. It can relieve pain by interfering with the arachidonic acid cascade. Then there is Clonazepam which is known as an anticonvulsant drug or seizure medication, but at low doses, this drug can be used for orofacial pain therapy. Indirectly, this drug can inhibit pain in the peripheral nervous system. Clonazepam has a longer effect but fewer side effects. There is also Gabapentin which is an anti-convulsant drug or anti-seizure drug that is often used in the management of neuropathic pain. The use of this prescribed drug for three weeks can show the effectiveness of treatment from BMS symptoms.

Then, there is Amitriptyline as an antidepressant drug. This drug works by activating opioid receptors and inhibiting some of the complex production of neuropathic pain. There are also vitamin B complex, especially vitamin B12 which is needed in the process of nerve remyelination. In patients with BMS, it is known that peripheral nerve damage occurs, so vitamin B12 treatment is very helpful for the patient’s nerve repair process. Finally, there is Alpha Lipoic Acid which is known to be a strong antioxidant drug, this drug provides good effectiveness for BMS sufferers. This drug can decrease oxidative damage in the nerves.

These medications are treatments that can be given to patients with Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS). The choice and outcome of this treatment can vary according to the condition of each patient because BMS itself is a multifactorial condition, so the treatment can also be done by combining treatments.
