Insomnia in hemodialysis clients may result in functional disabilities

Chronic kidney disease (PGK) is a chronic disease that must undergo hemodialysis therapy and potentially affects daily life, even cause functional disabilities. Almost all clients of hemodialysis experience functional disability either as a result of early illness or because of hemodialysis treatment. Functional disabilities are regarded as an interaction of the limitations experienced by individuals with their environment. Functional disability is not only a physical or mental state but is a multidimensional phenomenon consisting of bodily functions, limitations of activity, barriers to social participation and environmental factors.

The incidence of functional disability continues to increase especially in hemodialysis clients. Functional disabilities of Hemodialysis clients can be seen in daily life. Clients with functional disabilities show a dependency in carrying out home duties, such as washing, shopping or cleaning the house. Another dependency requires assistance in transportation, ambulation, financial and drug management. Some other work can still be done alone by hemodialysis clients such as eating, bathing, phone usage and walking. In general, hemodialysis clients experiencing functional disabilities require assistance in fulfilling daily activities.

Functional disabilities on hemodialysis clients that are left continuously can cause more severe problems. Functional disabilities can increase the burden of families who take care of even death for the sufferer. Many studies analyze the causes of functional disabilities on hemodialysis clients. One of the factors analyzed is the insomnia condition that proved related to the functional disability experienced by the client with Hemodialysis.

Sleep quality is a person’s satisfaction in sleeping, and a person who does not show feelings of fatigue, easy arouse and anxiety, lethargic, and apathy, blackish around the eye, swollen eyelids, red conjunctiva, sore eyes, broken attention, headache and often evaporated or sleepy. A total of 55% of chronic kidney disease clients undergoing Hemodialysis have a sleep quality score of > 5. Sleep disorders in hemodialysis clients are the accumulation of uremic toxins, dialysis procedures, accompanying medical problems, or the presence of psychiatric or psychosocial problems.

This Insomnia results in a decrease in sleep quality which significantly leads to a condition of fatigue and weakness due to lack of sleep so that the body does not return refreshed or refreshed. Most of the clients of Hemodialysis stated experiencing decreased quality and quantity of sleep. The results in the body are not energetic in physical activity and less excited in activities. Proper intervention in improving the sleep quality of patients with Hemodialysis is necessary to reduce the incidence of insomnia and prevent functional disability.
