Tooth extraction is a common procedure performed in the field of dentistry. Alveolar bone resorption is a condition that follows after a tooth extraction. After healing, the height and width dimensions of the alveolar bone never reach the original dimension before tooth extraction. Although the healing process takes place and the inflammation process has subsided, bone resorption can still continue. Therefore, a socket preservation action is needed to maintain the alveolar bone dimensions.

Alveolar bone has an important role in providing support for prostheses, both aesthetically and functionally. Adequate alveolar bone support is one factor in achieving successful denture manufacturing. Giving a combination of propolis extract and Bovine Bone Graft (BBG) which is anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, osteinductive and osteconductive is expected to improve bone regeneration.

This study aims to determine the effect of propolis extract and BBG combination on the number of osteoclast cells and osteoblast cells as the socket preservation effort after the extraction of Cavia cobaya teeth. The research method was conducted with 56 Cavia cobaya divided into 8 groups, each with 7 individuals. The left lower incisor was extracted and given PEG application, propolis extract + PEG, BBG + PEG , and a combination of propolis + BBG + PEG extract .The trial animals were executed on the 14th and 30th days, then a histopathological examination (HPA) was performed to count the number of osteoclasts and osteoblasts with a 400x magnification light microscope with 9 visual fields. Data from the study were conducted by One-Way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests.

This study found that the highest number of osteoclast cells occurred in the 14th day group with BBG + PEG treatment , and the lowest occurred in the 14th day group with propolis + BBG + PEG extract treatment. While the highest number of osteoblast cells occurred in the 30th day group with a combination treatment of propolis + BBG + PEG extracts, and the lowest occurred in the control group ( PEG ) 14th day.

The study concluded that the combination of propolis and BBG extracts effectively reduce the number of osteoclast cells and increase the number of osteoblast cells in the preservation of post-socket cavity cobaya tooth extraction with an active substance concentration of 2%.
