UNAIR NEWS – Based on information from the World Health Organization (WHO), there is no study stating that fasting can increase the risk of disease. Even the opposite, fasting can improve the immune system.

Since the last few months, the Covid-19 pandemic has struck around the world. Even in Indonesia, the total of confirmed cases exceeds 13,645 confirmed cases on Saturday, Mei 9, and the government making restrictions on community activities outside the home.

Responding to this, Mahmud Aditya Rifqi, S. Gz., M.Si., a nutritionist in Faculty of Public Health Universitas Airlangga (FKM UNAIR) explained that maintaining the immune system with the current condition is by keeping the nutrient intake and hydration or fluid consumption of the body.

“The condition is different now, and we cannot leave the house freely. Besides, we can’t consume various types of food. Maintain nutrient intake and hydration is essential because our nutritional intake and hydration influence our immune system, “said Mahmud.

Mahmud explained that no type of super power food could improve the body’s immune system if you only consume one type of food. According to him, antioxidants have a relationship with enhancing the body’s immune system. Antioxidants also improve the performance of T cells and cell B in the body’s immune enhancement.

“According to the International Society of Immunonutrition (ISIN) stated that vitamin E, vitamin C, zinc is good for the elder, “he explained.

Hydration intake should also be considered. Especially, mineral water intake with at least eight glasses a day, and people are allowed to consume infuse water and processed vegetables and fruits that contain a high amount of antioxsidant.

According to him, we need to consume several types of drinks wisely. Especially drinks that contain sugar. The high intake of pure sugar needs to be limited because it can increase the blood sugar levels that cause the body to be hungry.

Furthermore, during the current pandemic like this time with limited space of activity outside the house, people should maintain their bodies. One of the examples is by doing moderate physical activity, such as exercise and aerobic.

“One of the activities is aerobic to maintain our heart performance and blood vessels. For example, running, skipping, treadmill, or using other tools as well. People can also do exercise like push up or sit ups, “he said.

By conducting a healthy and productive living pattern that emphasizes nutrient intake and proper hydration can lower the risk of pathogenic invasion, viruses, or bacteria. (*)
