UNAIR NEWS – One way to improve the quality and productivity of work is by applying the 5S method. The 5S program itself comes from the Japanese words, namely Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, and Shitsuke. In Indonesia, he continued, it was known as 5R (Concise, Neat, Clean, Clean and Diligent).

The application of Occupational Safety and Health (K3) in the company aims to protect and ensure the safety of all workers. Besides, K3 is also used to ensure that every production resource can be used safely and efficiently.

Realizing the importance of K3 in a company, Dr. Abdul Rohim Tualeka, Drs. M. Kes and the team conducted research. According to him, the matter of K3 must follow the system approach by applying the K3 Management System (SMK3).

“The aim and goal of SMK3 are to create a safety and health system in the workplace,” he explained.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence between the length of service and knowledge of 5S with the application of 5S. Data were obtained from a study conducted in the heavy equipment fabrication department of Gresik logistics company.

“In total, there is a workforce of 25 workers who were analyzed,” he added.

This research is in line with the results of research at the Wan Cheng Manufacturing Company. The research shows the application of 5S can improve work productivity and work efficiency. Conversely, a lack of efficiency and organization in the workplace results in a waste of time and resources. Besides, it will also cause low-quality products, disorganization, safety problems and shipping delays.

The results of the regression analysis of 1000 bootstrap samples showed that there was no influence of the working period with the application of 5S because most of the workforce had a service life of less than six years.

“Even though the work period will affect if it has a long work period,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dr. Abdul Rohim found that there was a relationship between the length of service and the attitude of employees towards implementing 5S in the logistics department of the heavy equipment fabrication company. The level of knowledge also influences the application of 5S in the workplace.

“Procurement of 5S knowledge must be done regularly to remember the importance of 5S in the workplace,” he concluded. (*)
