UNAIR NEWS – The emergence of Permenkes (Minister of Health’s Regulation) that Exclusive breastfeeding should be available for six months and it is recommended to continue until the baby is two years old or older faces several problems. One of them is for female workers.

Research by Prof. Tri Martiani, one of Professors at Faculty of Public Health (FKM) Universitas Airlangga revealed the findings of the phenomenon of exclusive breastfeeding. Especially for working women and women of specific age categories. The results were written by Prof. Tri in an international scientific journal entitled An Analysis about the Influence between Individual Characteristics and Occupational Factors Toward Exclusive Breastfeeding (EBF) (Study at the Industrial Center of Sidoarjo District).

“Statistically, age and work shift factors affect exclusive breastfeeding by female workers,” she said.

According to Prof. Tri, his research focused on women workers in an industrial area in Sidoarjo Regency and took 114 female workers who have babies while working.

“The aim is to look at the effect of individual and occupational characteristics factors on exclusive breastfeeding for women workers,” she said.

The results of the study showed that only 47.4% gave exclusive breastfeeding. The percentage of female workers aged 20-35 years who gave exclusive breastfeeding was 58.4%. Age over 35 years 34.1% who provide exclusive breastfeeding.

“39.8% of female workers who work with the work shift system provide exclusive breastfeeding,” she said.

Prof. Tri explained that exclusive breastfeeding, according to WHO is giving milk to babies from birth to six months of age except for drugs and vitamins. Female workers are one of the factors that cause a lack of achievement in exclusive breastfeeding.

“Infant mortality is a significant health indicator. Various things that can be done to reduce and prevent infant death is to increase nutrition during the first 1,000 days of life, “she added.

This research, said Prof. Tri, found the result that age and work shift statistically would influence mothers to be able to give exclusive breastfeeding or not. In this study, female workers aged 20-35 years, 58.4% gave exclusive breastfeeding, more than 35 years old 34.1% gave exclusive breastfeeding.

“Although in general, the level of exclusive breastfeeding is still deficient, another interesting thing is the decline in the achievement of exclusive breastfeeding for female workers aged over 35 years,” she said.

Work company has supported exclusive breastfeeding at work and during working hours. This is certainly very good so that all women workers can give exclusive breastfeeding. IEC still needs to be done regularly to women workers so their knowledge of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding can increase and they can provide exclusive breastfeeding to their babies.

“Thus the nation’s next-generation can grow optimally at the beginning of their lives,” she said. (*)
