UNAIR NEWS – Prof. Dr. Hendy Hendarto, dr., Sp.OG(K) is 113th professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) inaugurated by UNAIR on Thursday, December 19. The inauguration ceremony for four professors was held in Garuda Mukti Hall Universitas Airlangga Office Building.
Prof. Hendy delivered a scientific speech about IVF as the latest technology to overcome infertilization. The FK professor explained that in Indonesian community, who are often blamed as the cause of infertilization are women. In fact, both men and women have the same risk, which is equal to 40 percent.
“There is a gender bias in our society, if there is a husband and wife who are having trouble having children, certainly the one to blame is the woman,” said Prof. Hendy
Non-medical problems such as environmental factors, lifestyle, obesity, and age factors can also affect the ovulation cycle in women, causing a decrease in fertility.
“It should be noted, the age of the women becomes the most critical, at the age of 35 years old, the ovum in that woman has decreased quality, and if they are stressful, don’t eat too much as obesity causes a decrease in fertility,” he added.
Furthermore, Prof. Hendy revealed, related to IVF, is an in vitro fertilization technique which is one of the techniques in assisted reproductive technology to overcome infertility problems in married couples.
The development of IVF was first carried out in the 1970s in England, and was first carried out in Indonesia only in 1987 at RSAB Harapan Kita. And in 1992 the first test tube baby was born at RSUD Dr. Sutomo Surabaya was named Ken Kinasih.
The long journey of IVF development has been more than 40 years, however, said Prof. Hendy, the cost is still quite high. The high cost of IVF is caused by 3 things, the cost of the initial examination, ovarian stimulation drugs, and FIV laboratory equipment.
“The use of sophisticated technology and expensive drugs that cause IVF services are not easily accessible, although the need for it is increasing,” he said. “For your information, we have conducted research on the use of menstrual blood stem cells to overcome ovarian failure in mice in hope that this can later be applied to humans so ovarian failure causing infertility permanently can be overcome,” he concluded.
