Using artificial intelligence for early detection of HIV / AIDS manifestations

UNAIR NEWS – HIV / AIDS cases in Indonesia continues to rise.  Like the iceberg phenomenon, HIV / AIDS cases will continue to spread if it is not handled properly. Especially in East Java, which is the province that ranks first as a contributor to HIV / AIDS cases in Indonesia.

HIV / AIDS has long been a challenge in health sector. Health practitioners continue to find the latest innovations to detect and deal with HIV / AIDS. One of them is Prof. Dr. A. Retno Pudji Rahayu, drg., M. Kes., One of the professors of Airlangga University who was just inaugurated on Wednesday, December 18. The professor from Faculty of Dental Medicine made a breakthrough in the early detection of HIV / AIDS by utilizing the latest technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI).

“There are several diseases that accompany HIV / AIDS, one of which is Candidiasis which is almost 90% accompanying HIV / AIDS,” said Prof. Retno

An infection caused by fungus Candida sp and one of the most pathogenic fungi that infect the oral cavity is C.albicans. Infection by C.albicans is the most common manifestation in the oral cavity of people with HIV / AIDS, and it is a vital sign of disease progression.

“This condition is alarming for people with HIV / AIDS, especially the nutrients enter through the mouth first,” said Prof. Retno

HIV diagnosis is carried out by examining SAP3 in the oral cavity and examining C. albicans in blastophore or hyphae forms. The expression of SAP3 enzymes indicates the infection and colonization of C. albicans fungi. Unfortunately, the two tests require different methods and a long time. Diagnosis with both tests also requires more costs.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has been developed in recent times, one of which is in the medical field. One of the results of its development is in the diagnosis of lung cancer. The purpose of using AI technology is to replace the eye of the doctor to find an abnormal focus on the pathology examination.

“Many researchers says that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be ready in the future but for in my opinion, we are prepared to use it now. AI is not only limited to industry and technology, but it can also be utilized in the medical field, “said Prof. Retno

“It is hoped that the development of AI technology can provide appropriate diagnoses and provide data related to oral candidiasis in HIV patients more efficiently in terms of time and cost,” she continued.

It was also reported that AI technology with a deep learning-based system method could reduce the percentage of errors by 3%. Hopefully, AI technology can improve the accuracy of the diagnosis so that patients can get the right therapy. Unfortunately, the application of AI technology in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology is still not widely applied. Thus, it becomes a separate task for colleagues to continue to disseminate and develop technology.

“By developing AI technology in the health sector, we have participated with the government in providing a decent life and a better life expectancy for people with HIV / AIDS,” concluded Prof. Retno. (*)
