UNAIR NEWS – Dean of Faculty of Humanities (FIB) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) Diah Ariani Arimbi, S. S., M, A., Ph.D. just flew to Leiden, the Netherlands. She participated in 11th “International Convention of Asia Scholars” (ICAS) at Leiden, Netherlands. The event was held on 15-20 July.
The 11th ICAS Forum emphasized roundtable panel discussions, keynote speeches, craft exhibitions, documentary film festivals, and Asian study book exhibitions. Through all these activities, ICAS managed to bring together Asian scholars and cultural experts from all over the world to interact directly.
On this occasion, Diah presented the material with the topic of pesugihan kembang sore (a heretic ritual performed as a mean to get rich instantaneously) presentation in Tulungagung. The topic raised at the conference was the result of two lecturers of English Language and Literature (Sasing) research. However, Diah delivered the presentation by herself.
“It was my third time participating in this event to discuss local culture. Especially about pesugihan (a heretic ritual performed as a mean to get rich instantaneously) in Tulungagung,” she said via telephone.
The results of her presentation will be published in scientific journals. In the effort of increasing UNAIR’s ranking as World Class University (WCU).
Furthermore, published journals will become a treasure of knowledge on university. Diah’s work entitled “Reading Contemporary Indonesian Women Writers” was the result of a presentation at ICAS in 2009 which was successfully recorded by Amsterdam University Press and translated into Bahasa Indonesia published by Universitas Airlangga Press in 2018.
“In 2009, my published book of Indonesian Muslim women was the result of ICAS,” he said.
ICAS 11 has advantages for academics. One of the benefits is having a lot of networking opportunities. A network that can be maximized is the possibility to share research and meet publishers.
Quoting from ICAS 11 website, there were 1,750 people participated in this event. This amount includes experts in every realm. Social-Humanities became the focus of 11th ICAS theme. There was some topic about rethinking Education, religious transformation, postcolonial, democracy, neoliberalism. (*)
