Depicting Labor Community through Play

UNAIR NEWS – Theater Student Activity Unit (UKM) Mata Angin Universitas Airlangga held a theater performance on Saturday (4/5/19) at Surabaya Wilawatikta College of Arts (STKW) Theater Building. The performance was Kacung Kidung Adyatma depicting the life of labor community.

The play in 2019 theater performances was presented by members of 2018 UNAIR Mata Angin. In between the performance there were also musical performances and poetry readings. Poetry performances were presented by Adnan UNAIR Indonesian Literature student from class 2017 and saxophone and piano music performances performed by Nawaf from Indonesian Literature UNAIR class 2018 and Jonathan UNAIR Law student class 2018.

Natasya Atmim as Head of the 2019 Stage Performance of Mata Angin Theater said that there were two plays performed this year, Bunga Rumah Makan by Utuy Tatang Sontani and Kidung Orang-orang Rakus by Teater Lembaga through the contradictory perspective of labor workers.

Bunga Rumah Makan’s perspective is of a low society by depicting a restaurant servant who experiences injustice and stereotyping while Kidung Orang-orang Rakus depicting workers from the perspective of the bourgeoisie by displaying corrupt figures and fraudulent people from the elite.

“The preparation for this performance has been done since the beginning of February. They were trained by Cak Cox and Mas Sur. During the training, each group was accompanied by 3 group assistants and trainers, “said Natasya.

Meanwhile, Puji Karyanto SS, M. Hum as their advisor, said that the theater performance was aimed to give experience to young members in the club. Through the performance, they gain experience in planning staging production until the performing day.

“Hopefully, the new kids can continue to be involved in tMata Angin Theater in the future, so it has new generation to bring its creative development in the future,” he added.

The performances were applauded lively by the audience. “We’re relieved and proud because our juniors have performed well,” said Rendi Mahardika as Head of 2019 UNAIR Mata Angin. (*)
