Facing Challenges of Disruption Era, FKp UNAIR Digs Student Innovations through NDC

UNAIR NEWS – The disruption era has created new changes and patterns for professional world, especially in in nursing profession. As technology advances, nurse must be prepared to face dynamic development of work industry. In addition to mastering knowledge and professional expertise, nurses are also required to adapt and innovate at the same time, thus their role will not be shifted by technology.

In this regard, Faculty of Nursing Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) tried to explore the innovations of prospective young nurses through 2019 Nursing Debate Competition (NDC). NDC 2019 carried the theme of Current Nurse’s Innovation on Improving Health Care Quality in Industry Revolution 4.0. The national scale debate competition was held to hone students’ critical thinking skills in preparing challenges in the future.

Setho Hadisuyatmana S. Kep., Ns., M.NS (CommHlth & PC), the lecturer of NDC 2019 juries said that Industrial Revolution 4.0 was a further industrial revolution in previous era. Indirectly, it had an impact and challenges for nursing profession.

“Entering Gen Z generation this year, where people are identical with 4 things. First, stay connected. People will be connected to access information everywhere. Thus, people might be smarter than nurses in the future. “he explained.

The second, Setho continued, big data. He said in the future, patients health information data are not only recorded in EMR (Electronic Medical Record) but use big data system.

The third, loud computing thus the users does not  have to carry electronic devices with large capacity to access or obtain information in there.

Finally, artificial intelligent on computer technology or machines able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence.

“The problem is not only in the nursing sector. People are now starting to act like they know everything. If you get injured for example, they immediately browsing on Google. Well, they dont know if that is a right treatment or not. Thus, we need to educate them.”Setho explained.

Meanwhile, Ika Nur Pratiwi S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., as the person in charge for NDC 2019 said through NDC, students should think the strategy to face Industrial Revolution 4.0.

“Nurses must be prepared, they should have a strategy onr how to deal with certain situation. In the future, the competition will be tight, the competitor also could be from abroad as well, “explained Ika.

Take a note, NDC was one of the series of 20th FKp UNAIR Anniversary. The NDC was held on Saturday, March 23 2019 in FKp Campus C UNAIR Building and attended by 30 teams from various universities across Indonesia. (*)
