Surabaya Mayor, Risma Motivates Malaysian Students in UNAIR

UNAIR NEWS – Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini attended MSU-UNAIR Global Leadership Program at Universitas Airlangga on Tuesday March 12, 2019. Surabaya’s first mayor gave motivation on how she developed Surabaya to reach the Guangzhou Awards in 2018 and placed Surabaya as the best popular online city categorize.

On that occasion, Risma expressed her joy for being invited to UNAIR several times. On that day, she spoke among hundreds of students and lecturers. There were 30 students of Management and Science University (MSU) Malaysia, 14 MSU staff, and 22 foreign students studying at UNAIR.

“It is an honor for me, especially the honored guest from MSU,” said Risma.

When she started her job, Risma said that the problem of Surabaya was 30 percent about poverty, and 50 percent on flood problems that were never finished. Resolving poverty, there are two points, health and education guarantees.

For this reason, education and health access for children from PAUD-SMA are free.

Risma has helped a lot in improving Surabaya. Started from city planning, entrepreneurs, health and sports facilities, and so on. Surabaya also prepared co-working space that can be used by students and freelancers.

“I want Surabaya to be well-known city in the world. Furthermore, I was appointed as President of United Cities Local Government of Asia Pacific (UCLG ASPAC) for period 2019-2020.” she said.

Meanwhile, in her remarks, Executive Director of Airlangga Global Engagement Prof. Ni Nyoman Tri Puspaningsih said that UNAIR has a high potential of cooperation with many countries, mainly related to education. For this reason, Risma was there to be the speaker as influentional mayor in the world.

“This collaboration between UNAIR and MSU was one of the strategies towards 500 World Class University,” explained Prof. Nyoman.

Prof. Nyoman said, there were foreign students from Dharmasiswa, a program for foreign students to study Bahasa Indonesia in UNAIR. (*)
