UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) Faculty of Law (FH) students once again made the university famous. This time, an achievement was made in a debate competition held by Kalijaga State Islamic University of Yogyakarta. The competition was titled 7th Law Study Center and Legal Consultation Week (PSKH) held on 23-26 November.
FH UNAIR debate team was represented by 5 students from the Semi-Autonomous Body (BSO) of Airlangga Young Jurist Society (MYMA), Xavier Nugraha (2015), Vincentia Sonia (2016), and Cindy Cendhani (2017) as speakers and Nirwana Rahma Safura (2016) with Eka Yunita Sari (2016) as a research team.
The 7th PSKH Law Week was attended by 16 universities both public and private throughout Indonesia. Some of theme include Indonesian Islamic University (UII), Sebelas Maret University (UNS), Brawijaya University, and several other universities.
This debate competition is a little different from the debate competition in general because it begins with making essays on democracy as a beginning. After going through the essay stage, in the preliminary stage, the UNAIR team was quite difficult because they had to face a big university such as Muhammadiah University Yogyakarta, Indonesian Islamic University, and Semarang State University.
One of the speakers, Xavier Nugraha, was participating in a debate competition at Semarang State University. So, only Sonia and Cindy and the research team prepared the concept. While Xavier only joined in the discussion for the past week. But finally the UNAIR team can win 3-0 in each match on the preliminary round.
In the semifinal round, UNAIR team again faced great rival, from the same eastern region, Universitas Brawijaya (UB), Malang. In the heated debate round, the UNAIR team managed to defeat the UB team with 4 vs 1 victory point. In the final round the UNAIR team had to face the Jakarta Muhamadiah team with a motion “Amendment to the 1945 Constitution through a Referendum”.
In the final round, the UNAIR team had tough moments because they got pro position. However, solidarity and cohesiveness are the weapons of the UNAIR team in forming systematic arguments so that UNAIR team wins the final round with victory points 7 vs 0.
In addition to getting 1st place in the competition, UNAIR team’s speaker, Xavier Nugraha also won the best speaker award .
“I was very surprised and grateful when my name was announced as the best speaker. Very unexpected, “Xavier said.
Victory as 1st place and best speaker in the 7th PSKH Law Week, closed the end of the semester with 4 victories and 4 awards as best speaker in this semester by BSO MYMA. (*)
