UNAIR NEWS – The Rector of Universitas Airlangga inaugurated Prof. Dr. Budi Suprapti, Dra., M.Si., Apt. as the 30th active Professor of Pharmacy. The inauguration ceremony was successfully held at the Garuda Mukti Hall UNAIR on Wednesday, December 15, 2021.

The woman who was born in Ponorogo on November 14, 1961, has published 16 Scopus-indexed articles and 74 other indexed articles on Google. During her speech in the inauguration, Prof. Budi Suprapti focused on the Challenges and Problems of Clinical Pharmacy.

According to Prof. Budi, many parties still often perceive pharmaceutical services as services that only focus on fulfilling quality and affordable pharmaceutical supplies.

“In fact, since the past few decades, the pharmaceutical profession has experienced growth and development by going through three main periods of pharmacy, covering traditional, transitional, and patient-oriented development stages,” she said.

In line with the shift in the role of preparation by pharmacists to the pharmaceutical industry, Prof. Budi conveyed the emergence of problems that became a challenge for pharmacy at that time. The medical problem is called “preventable drug-related morbidity and mortality.”

Preventable drug-related morbidity and mortality are serious medical problems that really need expert attention. They also require the development of services to reduce and prevent drug-related morbidity and mortality in patients.

“In 1971 in America, 140 thousand patients died and 1 million patients were hospitalized due to adverse drug reactions,” said Prof. Budi Suprapti.

“As a result, this condition gives rise to a new mission for the pharmaceutical profession to meet the needs of society,” she continued.

In practice, clinical pharmacy will collaborate with patients, doctors, and other health professionals. “Currently, clinical pharmacy practice has become a standard part of Indonesian pharmaceutical services where pharmacists provide care to optimize drug therapy and improve health, well-being, and disease prevention,” she said.

Prof. Budi herself emphasized that the success of drug therapy depends on the selection of drugs, drug products, and the design of dosage rules. In principle, drug dosing rules need to be done individually, especially for drugs with a narrow therapeutic range, with a concentration limit in the blood between toxic effects and adjacent therapies.
