Prof. Dewi implements microencapsulation design for safe and effective pharmaceutical preparations

UNAIR NEWS – Ensuring the availability of quality medicines for patients is one of the supports to achieve Good Health and Well-Being point of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The third point of the SDGs aims to ensure a healthy life and improve the welfare of all Indonesian people. In this case, pharmacists and doctors and other health workers also try to achieve this goal. There is no exception for Prof. Dewi Melani Hariyadi, S.Si., M.Phil., Apt., Ph.D.

In her inauguration as Professor of Pharmacy, Prof. Dewi delivered an oration entitled Application of Microencapsulation Design for Quality, Safe, and Effective Pharmaceutical Preparations. Through her research, she explained that drugs or vaccines are formulated in various dosage forms to facilitate safe and efficient drug delivery. The drug delivery system itself is a term that describes how the drug can get to the target site.

“A drug delivery system can be said to be good if it has a smaller frequency of administration but is able to produce a maximum therapeutic effect and reduce side effects,” she explained on Wednesday, December 8, 2021.

The 29th professor of the Faculty of Pharmacy said that microencapsulation as a technology in the pharmaceutical world can be used to form an effective drug delivery system. Microencapsulation is a process in which an active substance, whether solid, liquid, or gas, is coated by a layer embedded in a homogeneous or heterogeneous matrix to provide a small capsule with many benefits.

Prof. Dewi continued that microparticles or microspheres from microencapsulation technology have great potential to be used as drug delivery systems to overcome drug problems with active ingredients in several classes of Biopharmaceutical Classification System (BCS). According to her, this microparticle or microsphere delivery system has proven to be one of the innovations in modern drug delivery systems to overcome the problems of solubility, drug bioavailability, and drug release and stability.

“The use of microencapsulation technology in the development of oral, parenteral, topical, and inhalation delivery systems has shown excellent results,” she explained.
