UNAIR NEWS – After three years, Universitas Airlangga has conferred another Doctor Honoris Causa. This time, the honorary degree was awarded to the President Commissioner and Independent Commissioner of PT Anabatic Tbk, Ignasius Jonan.

The inauguration took place solemnly on Tuesday, November 23. The honorary degree awarding ceremony for the alumnus of Accounting UNAIR was held in the Garuda Mukti Hall, UNAIR Campus C Management Office.

According to UNAIR Rector Prof. Dr. Moh. Nasih SE., MT., Ak., awarding an honorary doctorate degree to Jonan was deemed fit by considering the leadership, managerial skills, and various achievements that Jonan has achieved at the national level.

Jonan is known to have extraordinary achievements, both during his tenure as President Director of PT Kereta Api Indonesia, Minister of Transportation, to Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM). Moreover, his achievements have been beneficial for the nation.

“Actually, the process for awarding an honorary degree (doctor honoris causa, ed) has been done for 4-5 years. At the beginning of the pandemic, we wanted to hold the inauguration, but it did not happen until now, “explained Prof. Nasih to the media.

Therefore, UNAIR then formed an ad hoc team, including appointing a promoter who could assist in the dissertation preparation, which was then tested for feasibility.

Furthermore, giving an honorary title to Jonan, an alumnus of UNAIR is considered easier because the man born in Singapore in 1963 is a member of the Board of Trustees (MWA) and is known to be active among alumni.

“We know his track record from the start. He graduated with an outstanding GPA and got a great job. He is a good person, and his teachers also say so,” added Prof. Nasih.

In front of dozens of guests consisting of state officials, fellow alumni, and FEB UNAIR students, Jonan delivered an oration entitled The Role of Transformational Leadership in Realizing Good Corporate Governance (GCG) in BUMN.

Furthermore, the man who is also an alumnus of Tufts University conveyed his achievements while working in government and the leadership principles he adhered to. Some of these principles include the need for hard work, treating subordinates humanely, and transforming without complaining.

“Then, there are three important things that we must do in government, namely ESG or environmental, social, and governance,” said Jonan in his speech.

Several national officials attended the ceremony, including the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees Prof. Dr. Mohammad Hatta Ali, SH, MH; Inspector General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Prof. Akhmad Syakhroza, Ph.D; 26th Indonesian Minister of Manpower Mr. Muhammad Hanif Dhakiri, S.Ag, M.Si; President Commissioner of PT PGN Tbk. Ir. Arcandra Tahar, MSc, PhD; 6th Minister of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration of Indonesia Mr. Eko Putro Sandjojo, BSEE, MBA;  17th Minister of State Apparatus Empowerment and Bureaucratic Reform Dr. H. Asman Abnur SE., M.Si. (*)
