UNAIR NEWS – Another proudest achievement was made by five students of Hospitality Management Faculty of Vocational Studies (FV) UNAIR from the Class of 2020. They won Top 5 or fourth place of Grand Challenger at the International “iWare Batik Hackathon Ideas Event” organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology on Friday, October 29, 2021.

In the competition, the UNAIR delegation consisting of Krisna Dwi Fauzy, Sadila Hidayati, Tarista Deva C, Elvanda Listyanto Pradana, and Maharani Savitrie presented innovative ideas on how to protect intangible cultural heritage through digital technology, especially the one that could support iWare Batik application.

Before the team offered the idea, they participated in a series of user-experience workshops in September. At the end of the workshop sessions, the team was required to present ideas in essay form. In other words, the competition was a follow-up program from the user-experience workshops.

About 926 students from 33 Indonesian universities participated in the workshop, and 156 delegates were selected to compete in the semifinal of the Hackathon event. Furthermore, delegates from 15 universities, including UNAIR, were selected for the final round.

“Thank God, UNAIR representatives passed the top 15 and won fourth place out of 33 universities in Indonesia,” said Umi Farichah Bascha, SE., MM., CHE. as the team’s advisor.

Umi Farichah said that competing in Hackathon event could improve team coordination skills. In addition, students also contributed to preserving batik as an intangible cultural heritage of Indonesia by displaying diamond ideas for the millennial generation.

In the process, students presented their ideas in English. The judges for the competition came from three countries: Germany, Hungary, and Indonesia. Persistence and enthusiasm led UNAIR students to conquer the champions.

Krisna Dwi Fauzy, as the team leader, revealed some valuable lessons learned during the process. “As a leader, through this prestigious event, I could learn many things. For instance, I could learn how to get through presentations and questions and answers directly with foreign judges (UNESCO, ed). In addition, I could learn how to formulate ideas, apply design thinking, and practice critical thinking as well as problem-solving,” he concluded. (*)
