UNAIR NEWS – Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) held an International Conference and Workshop on Basic and Applied Sciences 2021(ICOWOBAS 2021). From Monday to Thursday, August 23-24, 2021, the activity was carried out virtually.

The event is a series of international workshops and seminars in collaboration with several foreign universities, such as the University of Technology Malaysia (Malaysia), Tishk International University (Iraq), and Salahaddin University Erbil (Iraq).

Dr. Eridani, M.Si., as the general chairperson of the event, said that this event every two years was attended by 250 people. For the seminars, he continued, 13 speakers from Malaysia, India, Thailand, Japan, Pakistan, and Iraq were invited.

Eridani revealed that academics could adjust related science and technology by raising the theme, ‘Development of Fundamental Science and Technology in the New Normal Era: Its Implementation towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’. The conference covered nine fields, including Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Computational Science, Statistics, Data Science, Environmental Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering.

“It is aimed towards sustainable development because, in this new normal, we have to adapt, especially for innovations that have been found. In this context, I see that FST lecturers are still active in producing publications and other innovations,” he explained on Thursday, August 26, 2021.

Furthermore, the workshop in the field of biology successfully collaborated with the Ministry of the Environment. It is inseparable from the success of one Biology study program alumnus, Prigi Arisandi, who managed to get an award at the international level.

“What I like from him, he is a smart person who can pass on skills or knowledge to juniors. That is very profitable,” he said.

Although held online, the conference received feedback from participants. It is in the form of many and beneficial networks for FST UNAIR.

Through this activity, Eridani hoped that during the pandemic and new normal conditions, all residents can get used to it, especially in Surabaya. Publications will also be intensified, especially in the scientific fields of Biology and Chemistry, to benefit society through downstream processes.

“We also hope that there will be applications, but we are not in a hurry. FST has been active, and they do not abandon theoretical scientific principles,” he concluded. (*)
