UNAIR NEWS – During the 2021 Outstanding Student Selection (Pilmapres), Pamela Handy Cecilia continues to make achievements. Even though she was busy with various preparations to face the second stage of the Pilmapres, the student from the Faculty of Dental Medicine (FKG) Universitas Airlangga managed to be the 2nd Winner of the 6th Joint Scientific Meeting in Dentistry (JSMiD) 2021, Review Article Category.

She achieved this amazing achievement through her review article entitled ‘Intake of Citrus Spp. and Its Relation in Decreased Head and Neck Cancer Risk: A Systematic Review.’ The title turned out to be a topic she raised for her thesis later on. As a senior, she has come a long way in formulating the thesis topic, which was compatible with the theme raised at the international conference.

“At first, my supervisor recommended me to join, and I got interested as well. Moreover, the category was the same as my thesis article, which is a review article,” said Pamela.

Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Diah Savitri Ernawati., drg., M.Si., Sp.PM(K)., and drg. Meircurius Dwi Condro Surboyo, M.Kes., Pamela managed to achieve this proud achievement. Even though she targeted another achievement in the competition, Pamela mainly hoped to get feedback from the judges and other participants on the work she presented.

“With the feedback, I can evaluate and improve my work,” she added.

Pamela raised the topic about the potential of lemons in dentistry in her work. Based on that study, consuming lemons regularly has the potential to reduce an individual’s risk of head and neck cancer, especially for heavy smokers and alcohol drinkers.

“I am very interested in this topic because the head and neck cancer cases in the world are quite high, and so are people’s consumption of lemons. Therefore, these two things are correlated and potential,” explained Pamela.

After the competition, Pamela was determined to study the potential of lemons further in reducing the risk of head and neck cancer. Pamela tried to find out how to reduce the risk and make the therapeutic effect on head and neck cancer patients.

“The most important thing is that I also try to make my writings published and useful for more and more people,” she concluded.

JSMiD is an international virtual conference held from Saturday, July 31, 2021, to Sunday, August 1, 2021, by FKG UNAIR in collaboration with Hasanuddin University and Hiroshima University Japan. It succeeded in attracting the interest of 1,500 national and international participants. (*)
