UNAIR NEWS – Thursday, Januari 28, 2021, Doctoral Program in Islamic Economics, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Airlangga (FEB UNAIR) held an open dissertation defense exam. It was carried out online through the Zoom Meeting and it went well.

Dr. Kartika Hidayati as a promovenda defended her dissertation entitled “Financing in a Sharia Perspective for Corn Farming in Lamongan”. Dr. Kartika said that corn is the second largest commodity in Lamongan Regency which is used as food as well as animal feed.

“When I went to the field and met with corn farmers, I found that on average, there was no synergy between their (farmers’, ed) corn production and their welfare. Why did it happen? Because they use loan sharks in their financing, ” said the active Vice Regent of Lamongan.

It was stated that the data for the dissertation was obtained through interviews, focus group discussions (FGD), and direct observation of corn farming in Kedungpring sub-district, Lamongan Regency. The FGD was held with participants from several stakeholders in Lamongan Regency.

“I chose Kedungpring because of the 27 sub-districts in Lamongan Regency, this sub-district has the least agricultural land, which is 0.5 hectares. That way Kedungpring sub-district becomes our sampling so that it can be a role model for sharia financing to improve their welfare,” she explained.

The research results showed that Islamic financing exceeds conventional financing (loan sharks, ed). This is indicated by agricultural yields which were originally an average of five to seven percent become 10 to 12 percent.

“Sharia financing can be accepted by farmers but it needs more massive dissemination to provide a deeper understanding of implementing the Islamic financing model in agriculture,” she said.

Several government officials were invited, both local and central government, such as Dra. Hj. Khofifah Indar Parawansa, M.Si as Governor of East Java; Dr (HC). Drs. H. Abdul Halim Iskandar, M.Pd as the Minister of Village PDTT RI; Dr. Dra. Hj. Ida Fauziyah, M.Si as Minister of Manpower of the Republic of Indonesia; Arzeti Bilbina, SE., MAP as a Member of the Indonesian Parliament; and Dr. Diah Yuliastuti, SH., MH as the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic of Indonesia. In addition, it was also attended by Dra. Hj. Safira Machrusah, MA as Ambassador to Algeria; Dr. KH. Asep Saifudin Chalim from the Amanatul Ummah Islamic Boarding School; and Drs. KH. Marzuki Mustamar, M.Si as Chairman of the East Java PWNU. (*)
