Inaugurating 92 medical specialist, Vice Rector II: Serve communities in remote areas

UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga has inaugurated its best doctors who are ready to devote themselves to the community. Being held in UNAIR Faculty of Medicine (FK) Hall, 83 medical specialist and 9 subspecialist students were sworn on Wednesday, March 11, 2020.

The 132nd inauguration of medical specialists was attended by UNAIR Vice Rector II Dr. Muhammad Madyan, SE, M.Si., M.Fin., Director of UNAIR Hospital Prof. Dr. dr. Nasronudin, Sp.PD-KPTI., Dean of FK Prof. Dr. dr. Soetojo, Sp.U., along with the leadership of the faculties and departments, and the Managing Director of RSUD Dr. Soetomo Dr. dr. Joni Wahyuhadi, Sp.BS., and other invited guests.

Until now, UNAIR has inaugurated 4,009 specialist doctors who have been directly involved in the community. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as well as Clinical Pathology Program are the programs contributing most students inaugurated. There were 11 students from each programs, followed by Department of Internal Medicine with 9 students.

In the inauguration procession, new graduates get some encouragements from the attending officials. Representing the Rector of UNAIR, Madyan advised that the inequality in the distribution of medical specialist in Indonesia is very high, and graduates should be able to optimize their potential to serve the community.

“Maintain the good reputation of doctors and do not be tempted by greed. You have to endlessly serve the community, “he said.

Madyan shared three things to consider by the medical specialists. First, the message to serve in the community with confidence because in the world of medicine, UNAIR has been ranked 551-600 in QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020.

Second, a message to help the government to overcome the distribution of medical specialists. And finally, the encouragement to be a lifelong learner.

Meanwhile, Prof. Soetojo in his remarks said that medical specialists who had just been inaugurated were expected to be ready to help in areas that still needed specialists, especially in areas with less specialists, such as Sulawesi, Maluku and Kalimantan.

“There are still wide opportunity to serve, therefore don’t waste it,” he said.

Furthermore, dr. Joni also briefly stressed that it is important for them to implement patient center care (service focused on patients, ed) when providing services. It means the patient now acts as a subject not an object.

“With communication, scientific foundation, and good skills, the patient will believe. And you will be able to face all the extraordinary challenges later, “he explained. (*)
