UNAIR NEWS – Raising quails can be one of the choices for side businesses today. Moreover, quail is one source of protein for the community to meet nutritional needs. From quails, protein sources can be obtained from meat and eggs.

Lecturer and researcher from Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Airlangga Widya Paramita Lokapirnasari said that the population of the Coturnix japonica Coturnix quail in Indonesia had increased every year. Thus, the potential to develop a quail livestock business has great prospects.

However, the use of antibiotics as growth promoters (AGPs) is prohibited because of the risk of antibiotic residues or pathogenic microbial resistance such as Salmonella, Escherichia coli and Clostridium perfringens against antibiotics.

Widya found innovations to find solutions by providing probiotics in the feed that could replace the function of AGPs.

Widya said probiotics are microbes that can live or develop in the intestine and can benefit its host, either directly or indirectly from the results of its metabolites.

“Probiotics that can be used as feed additives are a group of lactic acid bacteria, namely Lactobacillus sp., Which have the characteristics of forming lactic acid as the end product of carbohydrate metabolism. Lactobacillus strains can improve growth performance, improve the quality of meat and egg products, and increase the immune response, “Widya said.

Widya and her team conducted research on the use of probiotics Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus rhamnosus as alternatives to AGPs on the quality of quail eggs.

“The results show that there is an influence between the treatment of external egg quality, which includes egg weight, egg height, egg width, eggshell weight, eggshell thickness,” said Widya.

The results of this research showed that there was an influence on the internal quality of eggs. Especially on egg yolk, height, width, and length of the albumen and egg yolk, albumen index and haugh unit.

Based on that research, Widya and her team concluded that the use of L.casei and L.rhamnosus probiotics could be used to improve the external and internal quality of eggs in the Coturnix coturnix japonica quail. (*)
