UNAIR NEWS – “Penelitian ini membuktikan adanya resistensi bakteri penyebab Gonore terhadap antibiotik cefixime melalui metode difusi.” Begitulah petikan simpulan dari riset yang dilakukan oleh Dr. Afif Nurul Hidayati dr.,Sp.KK, FINS-DV, FAADV., tentang Resistensi Antibiotik Cefixime terhadap Bakteri Penyebab Gonore.

In her presentation, she explained that gonorrhea, is still a majorvhealth problem fromsexually transmitted infections (STIs). That, she explained, is often found in developing countries and is the second highest STI in the world. According to her, the incidence of gonorrhea is increasing every year. Moreover, gonorrhea is an STI caused by the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria that requires antibiotic therapy, but there is an increased rate of antibiotic resistance in the bacteria.

“It is resistant to penicillin, tetracycline, and quinolone groups increases so they are not recommended to be used for gonorrhea therapy in some countries,” she said.

Furthermore, Dr. Afif Nurul said, the method for measuring sensitivity tests can be done with several techniques. The method most often used is based on the Clinical Laboratory Standard Institute (CLSI) with the diffusion and dilution of discs. Another method, she added, is based on the National Committee for Clinical Labroratory Standards (NCLLS) by using the Etest technique, which is an antibiotic strip dilution to determine the MIC.

“The disc diffusion technique by CLSI is considered more efficient for countries with limited facilities and it is considered cheaper, and easy to apply,” she said.

In the end, she explained that the study, tested 20 samples of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates taken from patients with complaints of purulent bodies coming to seven community health centers (Puskesmas) in Surabaya. The study design, she said, was a descriptive cross-sectional observational laboratory study, from June 2017-September 2017.

“The results of this study found 7 out of 20 samples of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates (35%) were not sensitive to cefixime antibiotics. In details, 3 of them have a 6 mm inhibition area, 1 has a 25 mm inhibition area, 1 has an inhibition area of 26 mm, 1 has an inhibition area of 29 mm, and 1 has an inhibition area of 30 mm, ” she concluded.
