UNAIR NEWS – The 13th Dentistry Scientific Meeting (DSM) competition held by Faculty of Dental Medicine (FKG) Universitas Indonesia just ended last week, September 29. However, there are stories from eleven students from FKG Universitas Airlangga. They managed to bring victory in several branches of competition — namely, literature review, dental olympiad, and national dental physiology quiz.

“On this occasion, FKG UNAIR successfully passed four teams consisting of two dental quiz teams, a literature review team, and a dental olympiad team. Alhamdulillah, the whole team managed to be the winner. In the dental quiz competition, we won first and third place. Besides, dental olympiad competition branch, we came in second place. Lastly, the team won third place in the literature review competition branch, “said Fadhilah Nursyahirah Wijaya as the delegation representative. Fadhilah revealed the topic carried by DSM was 21st Century’s Innovation of Dentistry: A Leap of a Better Dentistry. In connection with that, she and two colleagues from the literature review team decided to formulate ideas about Osteoporotic Jaw Bone therapy with tissue engineering using a combination of Injectable Chitosan Scaffold, Concentrated Growth Factor, and Gingival Mesenchymal Stem Cells.

“In the dental olympiad, each team was asked to display their respective strengths in terms of dental practice. There are three categories tested, namely wire bending (braces and dentures); wax carving (conservation of teeth and dentures); also dental determination (differentiating teeth according to FDI World Dental Federation), “continued the girl in the seventh semester.

During the competition, all FKG UNAIR delegations tried to mobilize their best abilities by strategizing properly and practising to the maximum before the implementation time. Another story came from Nur Azizah, a member of the first team for the dental quiz competition branch. She admitted that her team had experienced difficulties when answering the questions of the primary examiners due to language constraints.

“We have to use English during this competition. Besides, the main examiner is Prof. Cheng Hwee Ming is from Malaysia. He has a different English accent, so it is challenging to grasp the purpose of the question. But it’s fascinating because we can get more knowledge about the human body physiology, ” she concluded.
