UNAIR NEWS – As a form of concern for the development of Early Childhood Education (PAUD), the Faculty of Psychology (FPsi) community service team of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) led by Dr. Hamidah, M.Si., held a training titled Building Tough Character Through Positive Care on Saturday, from September 21, to Sunday, September 22. It was held at Sutopo Nursing Academy, Krembangan, Surabaya, to develop competence of teaching staff or often called Bunda PAUD incorporated in the Integrated PAUD Post (PPT).

According to Hamidah, PPT is an informal educational institution established by Dyah Katarina in 2005. “Mrs. Dyah is the wife of the former Mayor of Surabaya, Bambang Dwi Hartono, as well as an alumna of FPSI UNAIR. She started PPT to provide educational facilities to children who were not educated well at home. Besides, Mrs. Dyah really focused on Early Childhood Education, even used it for dissertation, ” she explained.

Hamidah said that the idea to hold the activity was from her concern over people’s behavior who tend to be difficult to manage, violate the rules, and do not care about the dangers in the surrounding environment. The lecturer in Department of Clinical Psychology and Mental Health then conducted a study to obtain information about the root of the problem. In her findings, the results in the community was from an inappropriate learning process.

“Inappropriate learning processes can occur both in children and adults through parents or other parties. Therefore, I formulated what must be observed is the issue of childcare at home as well as outside the home. It means that care must be done at home, then only strengthened outside, “added Hamidah.

Later on, the activity can also be disseminated to other areas in Surabaya by adopting the same patterns. She also said if Dyah Katarina also supported it. The plan, starting next month Hamidah will start to conduct socialization related to family care to other PAUD educators outside Krembangan District.

“The total number of participants yesterday was around 60 people. Some of the material discussed include patterns of positive and healthy positive parenting. Then, we also invite them to produce works in the form of images containing messages about parenting experiences. It will be compiled as a book, “he said.

Later, the PAUD educators will be assigned to implement parenting patterns taught to the families of PAUD children. During that time, they were also facilitated by the whatsapp group as a forum for consultation, monitoring and evaluation. Throughout the community service activities, they will be assisted by some UNAIR FPSi students along with the Vice Dean I of FPSi UNAIR, Dr. Nur Ainy Fardana N., M.Si.

“I can’t expect much because building a behavior is not easy and takes time. At least, PAUD educators know how effective, healthy, happy and supportive parenting is. So the children can be a polite, tough person, with a big heart. When a child is like that, he is expected to be able to anticipate slowly problems he will face later on,” concluded Hamidah. (*)
