UNAIR NEWS – Having a healthy body and avoided from various diseases is everyone’s dream. Therefore, implementing a good lifestyle and prevention to dangerous diseases such as cancer must also be done early.

Cancer is a severe disease and has the potential to cause death to people. Based on the latest data released on global cancer in 2018 by the International Agency for Cancer Research of the World Health Organization (WHO), the global cancer burden has increased to 18.1 million new cases and 9.6 million deaths.

It inspired Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) students, Zilvana Nurul Iza, S1 Statistics Program student, Faculty of Science and Technology UNAIR to create candy as cancer prevention. The innovation was titled “Utilization of Turmeric as a Cancer Prevention through Kuper candy” managed to get a bronze medal in International Malaysia-Indonesia-Thailand Symposium on Innovation and Creativity competition (IMIT-SIC 2019)” held from Sunday, June 16 to Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at Princess of Naradhiwat University, Thailand.

Zilvana said that the product could prevent cancer, stroke, and dementia because it is made from spices with proven efficacy. The ingredients for production are also easy to obtain.

“This innovation arose due to my anxiety on events that appeared and indeed were quite dangerous for life. Cancer is not just any disease, so I tried to find a way to prevent it and finally got the idea of making cancer-preventing candy. Why candy? Some literature states that candy is something that is easily liked by people, “she added.

Global press releases provide data that the sufferer and the death rate from cancer rise every year. One in five men and six women developed cancer during their lifetime, and one in eight men and eleven women died from cancer.

Zilvana also said that cancer preventing candy can be consumed by everyone except pregnant and lactating mothers. Cancer prevention candy is also effective and easy to consume.

In the future, Zilvana has an intention to develop more products and improves the efficacy of this innovation, and hopefully, it will be able to prevent other serious diseases. Hopefully, this innovation can inspire other students to be more innovative and critical to problems. (*)
