UNAIR NEWS – Literacy activists affiliated in Literate Millennial Movement community (L-MMove) held intellectual-based social activities called NgabubuRead. The activity was held on Sunday, May 12, 2019 at Roudlotul Muttaqin Joglo Mosque, Sidoarjo. It was themed Moco Kahanan. Through these activities, L-MMove invited the public, especially the millennials, to read a lot to avoid being misled by fake news.

Moco Kahanan means Reading Life, through this activity, we want people to read phenomena in life so they won’t fall prey to hoaxes,” said Lutvi Aldian Syah as the chief executive.

The event was Islamic books handover from representative of Library and Archives Agency of East Java to the Head of Joglo Mosque management. The event was also attended by Drs. Sudjono MM. as head of East Java Library and Archives Agency.

Interestingly, participants were from various elements of society, student organizations, and literacy community. They were from Student Associations (Hima) of UNAIR D3 Library, UNAIR Information and Library, Library Wijaya Kusuma University, Indonesian School Library Workers Association (ATPUSI), and Community Reading Park Forum (TBM). The participants were very enthusiastic during the events especially children.

L-MMove also had the opportunity to give certificates of appreciation to Surabaya literacy activists, Yusron Aminulloh as Founder of MEP Training Center and Handoko, activist of Story Telling Surabaya.

Lutvi hoped that the award will trigger a spirit of community literacy. “In the future, we will continue to build networks between individuals and communities to realize this shared commitment about the literacy movement,” he said.

Meanwhile, Achmad Fikri Fitrananda as Founder of L-MMove said that the holding of NgabubuRead event was a form of concern for literacy activists in fostering a reading culture in the community. “This event is also part of our shared lesson, that literacy should not be simplified only to reading and writing on paper,” he said.

Fikri also said that the most basic resistance is fighting ignorance. “Fight by reading! Everything needs to be read, phenomena or discourse, “he said, quoting Soesilo Toer. (*)
