UNAIR NEWS – Indonesia’s contribution to earth’s degradation has reached alarming state. Indonesia’s ecological condition is in a critical stage. As a result, earth is no longer friendly. In several news articles, it was mentioned that Indonesia was named the second largest oceanic plastic waste contributor in the world.

According to data from Indonesian Plastic Industry Association (INAPLAS) and Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia’s plastic waste reaches 64 million tons per year. 3.2 million tons of plastic waste is disposed into the sea. The sea has been contaminated with dangerous plastic waste and it will affect the destruction of marine ecosystem.

Similar to pollution which happens around us. Dirty dust and soot is often found anywhere in Indonesia, in any part of the days. Pollution in water, air and land make the earth even hotter.

For example, Jakarta is a source of air pollution. It also contributes in the record for the worst air pollution in Southeast Asia. In the World Air Quality Report 2018 report, the average annual concentration of particulate matter (PM) 2.5 in 2018 reached 45.3 µg / m3. It can be interpreted that the concentration of PM 2.5 in Jakarta reaches four times the annual safe limit according to WHO standards, which is 10 µg / m3.

Other problems such as global warming also occurs due to the increasing average temperature of the sea and the earth, flooding due to high rainfall, difficulty in getting clean water, forest destruction, and abrasion continue to haunt Indonesia today. The impact of global warming in Indonesia can be seen from rising sea temperatures faster than expected. The deforestation rate of forest destruction in Indonesia is ranked first in the world.

This Earth Day on April 22 should make Indonesian people aware of the environmental damage that is now disturbing the sustainability of the earth. As inhabitants of the earth, it is appropriate for humans to preserve the environment. The wealth that has been given should be carefully guarded, not to be exploited on a large scale. There must be a mental revolutionary effort for the entire population of Indonesia and even the world to save the earth in the future.

“Let’s change from now on, let’s preserve and save the earth”
