UNAIR NEWS – The Financial Services Authority held a “Jazz in Campus” event on Feb. 19 at Garuda Mukti Hall, UNAIR Management Office, Campus C. It was opened by “JFive”, a jazz band from UNAIR. All JFive members are students. JFive presented popular songs among millennial children such as Glenn Fredly’s Up , Chrisye’s Kala Cinta Menggoda , Maliq & D’Essentials’ Dia .
The opening remarks were delivered by Vice Rector II Dr. Muhammad Madyan SE., M.Si., M.Fin. He said that this was the first time Jazz in Campus held in a sacred place , Garuda Mukti Hall. With the performances, jazz is not difficult to be accepted among the public.
All this time many assume that jazz is not universal. Jazz in Campus was held to break the existing stigma by displaying real jazz identity.
“UNAIR students enjoyed Jazz in Campus performances. Hopefully Jazz in Campus can be used as a place to take a break from tiring activities on campus, “continued Madyan.
In response to the remarks by Vice Rector II Muhammad Madyan, Indah Kurnia as member of Indonesian Parliament and CEO of Jazz in Campus told the background of Jazz in Campus, which was held in 2008. Jazz in Campus will be held for 3 days, from February 19-21 at 6 Surabaya campus, including UNAIR.
According to Indah Kurnia, the strong reason why it is performed in campuses is to get real appreciation from students. Students are assessed as observers who are able to analyze things critically. Because true musicians need an appreciation and recognition.
“It was impressive to see the enthusiasm of students enjoying jazz music,” said Indah Kurnia.
One of the performances was from Mus Mujiono singing Esok Masih Ada by Glenn Fredly. Mus Mujiono is known as a legendary Indonesian jazz musician, “Indonesian George Benson”.
The man who is addressed as Nono almost mastered all musical instruments, from keyboards, drums, guitars, saxophones. (*)
