UNAIR NEWS – Basically, the body has a system called self healing . When it is attacked by a disease, the body can heal on its own without the need for antibiotics. Giving antibiotics carelessly will actually attack the body’s own resistance. And instead of being cured, it deteriorates the body.
In the body there are normal flora reach around 90,000-100,000 trillion. Normal flora is a collection of organisms that inhabit certain organs in the human body. Generally, normal flora consists of good bacteria that protect these organs.
If normal flora is in the intestine, then they are tasked with destroying food and producing vitamin B complex and vitamin K. In addition, the presence of normal flora is also to induce the emergence of immunity or antibodies, and inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria or disease-causing bacteria.
Head of Antimicrobial Resistance (KPRA) of Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) Hari Paraton, dr., Sp .OG (K) explained, when someone takes antibiotics randomly, good bacteria will be killed. While pathogenic bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics will continue to develop because there is nothing to inhibit.
“This is called selective pressure. Some are suppressed, others appear, “he said.
Hari stressed that the use of antibiotics is actually only needed for the treatment of diseases caused by bacterial infections.
“Antibiotics are not used to treat viral diseases, such as sore throat, runny nose, fever, herpes, flu, mumps, chickenpox, varicella, and dengue fever,” he said.
One the causes of high antibiotic resistance in Indonesia is the easiness to get antibiotics without a doctor’s prescription.
“At present, non-compliance with the use of antibiotics has plagued the community, and no longer based on the indication, type and dosage. Moreover, antibiotics can now be purchased at stalls, kiosks and pharmacies without having to be prescribed by a doctor, ” he said.
According to him, antibiotic resistance occurs when a person consumes antibiotics without following the rules recommended by the doctor. In this case it does not comply with the dosage of the drug that must be taken, the time schedule for taking the drug, and the discipline to finish the drug completely.
Hari also stressed the medical staff not to be rash in diagnosing an illness. Sometimes diseases due to viral and bacterial infections are difficult to distinguish. For this reason, it is necessary to examine the blood of the patient in order to overcome these doubts.
“It is fitting for doctors to carry out in-depth examinations on patients, so that there is no misdiagnosis between viral diseases and bacterial diseases,” he explained.
