UNAIR NEWS – To deepen the practice gained during lectures, 15 students in Occupational Health and Safety (K3) PSDKU Public Health Program at Universitas Airlangga in Banyuwangi visited PT Bumi Suksesindo, Wednesday, October 17.
PT Bumi Suksesindo (BSI) is a domestic investment mining company (PMDN) that has a Production Operation Mining Permit (OP IUP) covering an area of 4,998 ha.
Located in Sumberagung Village, Pesanggaran Subdistrict, Banyuwangi Regency, the main activity of the company focused on the gold and copper production business units in the seven operation hills or better known as Tumpang Pitu.
“Do not want to waste the opportunity, we took students there so they can get more knowledge, not just theory,” said Dian Santoprayoga, lecturer on occupational disease course at PSDKU UNAIR Banyuwangi.
“This activity is expected to be a form of cooperation between UNAIR and PT BSI, so students can be better known and graduates can be accepted there,” said Dian.
Students were welcomed at the Post 4 Hall of PT BSI. The activity began with the delivery of safety induction by Riza Faisal, an employee of the PT BSI Safety department. The activity continued with the provision of material on PT BSI production flow and K3 management system there. Finally, students were invited to factory tour of PT BSI production spots.
Based on world-class best practices, PT Bumi Suksesindo (BSI) has implemented a safety system, procedures and gold rules that are adhered to as part of the Daily Work Safety and Environment Analysis, covering all work systems, work procedures, workers and even visiting guests.
“These rules are at the core of the BSI safety regiment as a whole, as well as being a ‘key indicator’ of safety helping managers to make adjustments to the safety system, workplace, and identify high-risk activities that require additional supervision,” said Riza Faisal.
BSI applies 127 articles of work safety procedures, such as the main hazard standards, health checks, traffic management, explosives handling and blasting activities, land clearing management, worker fatigue regulation, OHS guidelines, Hazard Identification Risk Assessment Control (HIRAC), and working at height.
“No one may work in unhealthy conditions, less fit, or be drowsy due to lack of sleep or fatigue. In addition, every worker is trained and tested continuously, and is only given a work permit if proven competent, “said Riza.
For emergency response purposes, BSI has formed an Emergency Response Team (ERT) which consists of selected personnel from each department, and is specially trained by BASARNAS (National SAR Agency). As proof of their competence, the BSI ERT team was sent to Aceh following the recent earthquake to assist disaster management activities.
“Implementation of technical, operational, administrative and other external relations activities carried out by BSI involving around 1,500 employees where 99% are Indonesian citizens and almost 62% are young people of Banyuwangi Regency,” said Sauki from the PT BSI Public Relations Division.
“This opportunity is certainly very good for PSDKU UNAIR students who are native to Banyuwangi, we are waiting for the graduates to join us,” Sauki said. (*)
