UNAIR NEWS – The successful separation of conjoined twins (pygopagus) Rochman-Rochim, was the result of synergy between Dr. Soetomo and Faculty of Medicine Universitas Airlangga. Therefore, to anticipate future cases of conjoined twins, , the two institutions should not be separated. Its synergy should be reinforced to produce innovations in the world of medicine.
It was conveyed by the Rector of Universitas Airlangga Prof. Dr. Moh Nasih, SE., MT., Ak., CMA., in ” Rochman-Rochim Conjoined Twin Treatment Release”, at the Loka Widya Husada Hall Dr. Soetomo (RSDS), Thursday, October 11.
Rochman-Rochim were released from Dr. Soetomo Hospital to their house in Mojowarno, Kab. Jombang, after Rochman was healed after undergoing reconstruction surgery, vesica urinaria procedure. Ceremonially, the release was carried out by UNAIR Rector with the Director of RSDS Dr. Harsono. It was marked by giving Rochman-Rochim’s daily notebook to Yulia Fatmawati, the nurse of Mojowarno Health Center, who handled the birth of the conjoined twins on September 4, 2009. The Rector also gave gifts to the two children.
At the event, there were Vice Rector I UNAIR Prof. Djoko Santoso, dr., Ph.D., Sp.PD., K-GH-FINASIM, Secretary of Universitas Airlangga Koko Srimulyo, Drs., M.Si., Dean of Faculty of Medicine UNAIR Prof. Dr. Soetojo, dr., Sp. U (K), and Head of the Integrated Conjoined Twin Center RSDS Dr. Agus Haryanto, Sp.A (K).

According to UNAIR Rector the handling of conjoined twins required very high innovation, and the the case must be handled ” case-by-case”. Each case of conjoined twins needs to be treated differently, so an innovation can be used to handle the case of other conjoined twins.
“That’s why UNAIR Faculty of Medicine and Dr. Soetomo is expected to intensify their cooperation to produce innovation in medicine. We all just intermediaries, for the existing case (illness – ed) we will continue to produce the best benefits, “said Prof. M Nasih.
The Rector also offered Rochman and Rochim, if they had graduated from high school and aspired to become nurses, Universitas Airlangga is ready to realize that goal. “The requirement is passing SMA first,” added the Rector.
GETTING BETTER
Director of RSUD Dr. Soetomo, dr. Harsono, expressed his pride on the Integrated Conjoined Twins team for the successful separation of Rochman-Rochim’s conjoined twins. The former Regent of Ngawi hoped that in the future both Rochman and Rochim will become better, and RSDS will continue to monitor and pay attention to their development intensively.
The Director of the RSDS also expressed his gratitude to all parties, both experts, nurses, therapists, psychologists, and also the mass media who have been intensely supporting the operation for 9 years.
As reported, vesica urinaria surgery with mitrofanoff method is surgery making urinary tract. The channel was made from Rochman’s appendix. It was successfully carried out by a team led by Dr. Tarmono, Sp.U (K). The results of this operation will make Rochman easier to urinate. He just needs to install the valve.

Explained by Dr. Agus Hariyanto, this surgery was done because pygopagus conjoined twins Rochman-Rochim only had one phallus (penis), and the organ was “attached” more to Rochim.
“So far, RSUD Dr. Soetomo / FK UNAIR always intensively cared for children who were born on September 4, 2009, because conjoined twins unified at pelvis with one phallus was the first in Indonesia and the fourth in the world, therefore we must strive for success, “he added.
Intensive care was mainly for Rochman, because he had to undergo seven major surgeries, since the separation operation nine years ago until the making of urine drainage equipment.
With the success of this vesica urinaria surgery , Rochman can carry out daily activities like a normal child in general. However, Dr. Agus asked Rochman to have routine exam every two weeks in Dr. RSUD Soetomo. The phallus making for Rochman must wait until he is 17 or 18 years old.
“So this release does not mean we are no longer watch Rochman-Rochim as usual. We still do intensive supervision, “said dr. Agus.
Anis Mulyo, the father of the twins said that he could only expressed his gratitude because the treatment received by his child was considered very special.
“There are too many good services and thoughts that we received for Rochman-Rochim from this hospital. With the completion of this surgery, we hope that our son’s confidence will be better because he used to carry catheter everywhere, now he doesn’t have to,” said Anis Mulyo. (*)
