Four steps to excellent public speaking skill

UNAIR NEWS – The ability to speak in public or public speaking is a primary skill neeed in daily life. For students, good public speaking skills can boost academic achievement (especially in presentation work) or non-academically. Furthermore, this skill can also be a plus value if we are already involved in the world of work.

Considering the importance of this ability, Briansyah Dewandri Septiawan, S.Hum., Presenter and reporter of the East Java TVRI Public Broadcasting Institution in Airlangga Career Club seminar explained the 4 steps a person needs to take to have excellent public speaking skills. Briansyah abbreviated the four steps as REAL. The first step is relevant to your audience, in speaking we must place ourselves in accordance with the audience that we are talking to.

The next step, eloquent present using clear language or using friendly language (language that is easily understood by the audience). The third step is articulate well tough and expressed or have good articulation skills. According to him, that skill can be trained by voice-reading books or newspapers.

“The final step is learning to be an expert or continuing practice. You can prepare yourself by talking to yourself in the mirror to practice your communication skills, “he added.

Furthermore, in the event organized by Center for Career and Entrepreneurship Development (PPKK) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) on Tuesday, February 11, 2020, Briansyah also added some preparations that can lessen nervousness when speaking in front of many people. The preparations include conducting a rehearsal by discussing the points to be discussed, not drinking caffeine, and checking the readiness of the outfit.

“Wear outfits that are comfortable and not too open because the appearance will be one of the main concerns of the audience,” he explained.

Finally, the alumni of the UNAIR English Literature student explained that when someone speaks in public, the body language will be the biggest concern. Therefore, Briansyah explained that when speak in the public, one must make eye contact or look at the audience, and stand as an alpha.
