UNAIR NEWS – Traditional Medicine Study Program (BATTRA) Faculty of Vocational Studies (FV) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), in collaboration with Fujian University, held a video conference with Universitas Airlangga (DECOTA) on Monday, June 21, 2021. It was themed “Aesthetic Acupuncture: The Natural Anti-Aging Treatment.”

Dr. Huang Lishan from Fujian University Traditional Chinese Medicine was present as a speaker at the event. A total of 237 participants consisted of 124 BATTRA students, 100 participants from Fujian University, 11 participants from the general public, and the remaining committee members and BATTRA study program lecturers.

Moderated by Maya Septriana, S. Si., Apt., M.Si., the Coordinator of the Traditional Medicine Study Program, Dr. Lishan explained that we could use beauty acupuncture therapy as an anti-aging.

“If we want to have healthy and glowing skin with small pores and good elasticity, we have to improve the Qi (life force or vital energy) and blood circulation system in the meridians. Therefore, the skin will be healthy and good,” she explained.

According to TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), Meridian, continued Dr. Lishan, is the channel through which Qi and blood circulate in the body. It also connects every part of the body as Zang Fu organs (producing and regulating Qi within the body).

“Meridians will affect the condition of each organ. Thus, it can be said that if there is a disturbance in the body, it will manifest on the surface. If there is something on the surface of the body, it also shows that there are health problems within the body,” she added.

If the meridians do not work well, continued Dr. Lishan, symptoms can be seen from the body’s surface. For example, there is pain, itching, edema, sinking surface, spots on the skin, discoloration of the skin, and wrinkles on the skin’s surface. So to get healthy and anti-aging skin, we need to improve the body’s Qi and blood circulation system.

Problems on the skin can be caused by heat pathogens, blood statics, and the presence of hot, humid factors in the body. Thus, the main principle in TCM for cosmetic cases is to expel pathogenic factors and tonify deficiency factors.

The methods often used in aesthetic acupuncture are acupuncture and moxibustion. In addition to these two methods, said Dr. Lishan, there are other methods such as the microneedle method, the balm method, the cupping method, the scraping method, the thread embedding method, the auricular method, and the dermal needle method.

“What really affects premature aging is sun exposure. It is best to avoid sun exposure. We need to pay attention to food and nutrition intake, maintain a good lifestyle, get enough sleep, exercise regularly, clean our skin regularly, and use skincare products that are suitable for our skin conditions,” advised Dr. Lishan.
