UNAIR NEWS – The COVID-19 pandemic has required every citizen to stay at home. Even though all activities are carried out at home, the 4G service is still not accessible in all regions because internet services have not yet reached remote areas.
In this regard, Badrus Zaman, S.Kom., M.Cs., one of the UNAIR experts, said that 5G service could bring economic improvement. It is undoubtedly in line with Indonesia’s efforts to welcome the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0.
“The 5G service in Indonesia, for now, is urgently needed. However, there is another urgent matter, equal distribution of internet access in Indonesia. I hope these two things can be fulfilled simultaneously,” he said to UNAIR NEWS on Wednesday, June 2, 2021.
Regarding the presence of 5G service, Badrus said it brings high speeds up to gigabits with low latency. He said it is a solution for video streaming, cloud computing, big data, IoT, games, and other issues.
However, Badrus explained that the distribution of internet services in Indonesia, especially in the 3T(the outermost, border, and disadvantaged) regions, is still a challenge.
“With Indonesia’s geography in the form of islands and mountains, it is necessary to make innovative efforts both from policy and technology involving the government and the private sector,” said the UNAIR Information Systems lecturer.
With the presence of 5G service momentum, Badrus hoped that all can enjoy this service in various regions in Indonesia, not only big cities but also remote areas in Indonesia.
“We hope that 5G service can be enjoyed by all people in various regions in Indonesia. However, until now, 4G service have not been evenly distributed, let alone 5G service,” he said.
Furthermore, Badrus emphasized that this 5G service can lead to an effort towards equal distribution of internet access and improvement of 5G service. It can be a solution for any issues related to SFH (study from home) and WFH (work from home) activities during the pandemic.
“One of the advantages is for equitable internet access and improvement of 5G service. You could even say this 5G service can be a solution for SFH and WFH issues during the COVID-19 pandemic situation,” he concluded. (*)
