UNAIR NEWS – As a world-class university, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) continues to improve in various aspects. Including for its latest objective, UNAIR focuses on providing comfortable and sustainable campus facilities and infrastructure.

However, how far has UNAIR transformed? As recorded in the UI Green Metric ranking data, since 2016, UNAIR has carried out various changes in some aspects related to infrastructures.

Transportation

Firstly, regarding transportation, Dr. Karnaji, Director of Logistics, Security, Order and Environment , S.Sos., M.Si  said that UNAIR has imposed restrictions on vehicles and centralized the parking system in campus area. “We have implemented this, students under the fifth semester are not allowed to bring a car,” he explained on Friday, May 7, 2021.

Furthermore, centralized parking system has also been implemented. For example, in Campus B, all vehicles will be parked in a multi-storey parking building near the Faculty of Humanities.

In Campus C, this system will be implemented in 2022. The entire parking area will be located behind the Sports hall and behind the Kahuripan Building. As for cars, a connecting road will be made at the back of the Faculty of Science and Technology to the Faculty of Public Health.

“So Campus C will be free of vehicles, especially in the FST, FF, FKM areas. Campus A will follow later because it is still hampered by a limited area,” said Karnaji.

Meanwhile, he continued, campus bicycle access is provided in all campus areas. He hoped that there will be cooperation with PLN to construct charging stations for electric bicycles.

Karnaji also revealed a plan, that this year, access to campus will be limited. The restriction is done by installing an electronic portal that can only be opened using a Student IDcard.

Water Management

Furthermore, UNAIR is also promoting water conservation. Although it has not been optimal, this effort will be increased to a wider area.

Efforts to save water including installing sensors on taps as seen in the Management Office area, from first floor to fifth floor.

“We have not yet managed to turn dirty water into clean water. But effort to achieve it has been made. Water in the mosque, for example, is re-collected and then used to water the plants, “he said.

Energy and Climate Change

In terms of energy, UNAIR has started to utilize environmentally friendly energy as electricity. Such as from solar panels, waterwheels, to the speed bumps. Standardization of LED lights has also been carried out.

“If possible, the energies will come from renewable energy. We have begun to use solar panels. InsyaAllah , this year they will be installed,” he said.

Regarding climate, UNAIR conducts regular emission tests for vehicles entering campus every two years. So, he continued, the vehicles that enter the campus have passed the test.

Setting and Infrastructure

Regarding land management, UNAIR is now trying to increase green open space. The target is that each faculty has a garden. For example, a vertical garden, gazebos, mini forest, and rooftop garden, as planned by FPK, FF, FEB, and FK.

Waste management

Regarding waste, UNAIR has consistently reduced paper usage. Although it has not been optimal yet, these efforts will continue to be intensified.

Education and Research

UNAIR has even involved research institutes to support the sustainability of nature. “Currently, research and community service have been directed there to support the sustainability of a healthy nature,” he concluded. (*)
