UNAIR NEWS – Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is the oldest medical education institution in East Java.  The Faculty of Medicine consists of 28 departments. One of the departments in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is a branch of medical science that studies the comprehensive management and impairment of function, disability, and disability (handicap).

The current Head of the Department is Dr. R.A. Meisy Andriana, dr., Sp.KFR (K). The department is in charge of the physical medicine and rehabilitation (Sp1) specialist program.

“This Specialist Program is a combined degree program with the title of SpKFR Masters in Clinical Medicine,” she said.

The department has some annual programs such as routine athlete examinations and participation in the commemoration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities (HIPENCA), which falls on December 3, including community service for the elderly and pediatrics.

The department possesses four advantages. First, the Gait Lab which is used for a series of examinations to check for pattern disturbances.

“In the Gait Laboratory there is a forceplate, two-dimensional cameras, and a combination with a surface electrode,” explained dr. Meisy.

Second, the availability of Pedar System. This tool is a tool for checking the pressure distribution of the feet. “This examination is needed to determine the right insole prescription according to the patient’s condition. It is also used to prevent ulcers (injuries) on the feet,” she said.

Third, Isokinetic Laboratory. The laboratory is used for the evaluation of muscle torsion and joint proprioception, which is useful for functional evaluation.

“This evaluation, for example, is used for an exam before return to sport,” she said.

Fourth, Orthotics Prosthetics Laboratory. It is a service in the manufacture and installation of assistive devices for patients who have lost limbs.

“We are working with Dr. Soetomo Hospital in the Kapalku Program in collaboration with Hiroshima International University, “said dr. Meisy.

The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has produced many graduates. There are some notable graduates such as Dr. dr. Imam Subadi, Sp.KFR (K), who is Vice Director (Wadir) of UNAIR Hospital; Head of Medical Rehabilitation Division of Rehabilitation Center (Pusrehab) Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia, Colonel (Med) dr. This department faces various challenges, including facilities and infrastructure that have not been updated with the technological advances, limited staff and doctoral staff, and one other challenge, to make academics gain professorship in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

“Facing the existing challenges, we will increase cooperation with international partners, expand research collaborations and community service with international partners, and increase the number of academic peer lists,” concluded dr. Meisy. (*)
