UNAIR NEWS – Sembalun Bumbung Village, Sembalun Sub-district, East Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, was one of the villages affected by the 6.4 SR earthquake that shook Lombok on July 29, 2018. As a result, there was a decline in several sectors such as the economy, health, education, and the environment.
From these problems, 14 students of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) under the guidance of Dr. Abdul Samik drh., M.Si., sailed to East Lombok on Saturday, December 28, 2019 to conduct a Back to Village (BV) Community Service Program (KKN) program.
“We wanted to help them with the development in some of these sectors after earthquake,” said Bagus Nurhidayat, KKN Coordinator.
“Even though it is a tourism village, waste and health problems are worrying. Especially since the earthquake, many residents are still traumatized. The decline in economic income and education issues also needs more attention, “added Adyt Alkautsar, one of the KKN team members.
The Community Service Program in East Lombok was the first and lasted for 21 days. Various work programs are arranged based on social mapping by adjusting the conditions and needs of local residents. “We also have a superior program that has long-term output, the program is divided into two types of activities, Jampang Sembalun and empowerment activities and enhancing the local economic potential of the community,” Bagus said.

The word berugaq is taken from the Sasak language which means saung or gazebo. The Berugaq Baca was built to improve children’s literacy and interest in reading here, “he continued.

Previously, there was a history talk with the child of Sembalun Bumbung Village Custom Chief for the purposes of making village history documentation. “We want to educate children to get to know the history of their village. Through this program, children can get acquainted and learn culture while playing to broaden their horizons,” explained the History Program student.
In the economic field, there is a management of local products, Sembalun bean seeds which are the typical food of Sembalun Bumbung village. Furthermore, insights were also given on how to package and promote local products.
“We also help producers to make packaging so it can be more attractive and create media to promote these products to increase sales,” he added.
The Community Service Program received a warm welcome from residents. Bagus hoped that the arrival of UNAIR KKN students and their programs can help restore the conditions of Sembalun villagers and have an impact on improvements in several sectors. (*)
