UNAIR NEWS – Academic Community of Universitas Airlangga once again held a protest rejecting the amendment of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Law by the House of Representatives (DPR). This time the demonstration was commanded by the Student Executive Board (BEM) of Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Airlangga, which was held in the backyard of FISIP on Friday, September 20, 2019.
The protest, attended by many groups of students and lecturers, condemned the DPR’s actions that had ratified the revision of the KPK Law. Furthermore, the masses also criticized the attitude of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) who also supported the revision of KPK Law.
The masses considered the actions taken by President Jokowi to be in conflict with what he had promised before becoming president, to strengthen the KPK’s position. Not only speaking at the protest, the students also held a theatrical play illustrated the death of KPK.
One of the FISIP UNAIR lecturers who participated in the demonstration, Airlangga Pribadi, in his speech said that the amendment of KPK Law did not make KPK stronger but weaker and died. From his oration, Airlangga also revealed that the reform agenda in Indonesia had been repeatedly eliminated until finally it led to the murder of KPK anti-graft institution.
“Many times in this republic, the agenda of reforms has been killed, oppressed, trampled on, but it still rises up against it, until finally these recent weeks, KPK has been killed legally, through the amendment of KPK Law,” he said.
Several FISIP UNAIR alumni also attended. One of them was Yuli, she appealed to students not to be afraid of being critical students or getting bad GPA.
According to him, students should be afraid if they keep watching injustice before their eyes. The woman who often defends human rights case also advised the students not to let their idealism be ridden or even bought by any political party for personal or group interests.
“Don’t let your idealism exploited by political parties or bought for their interests. It has happened so often, these political parties use students for their interests, and strangely on behalf of the interests of the nation and state, “said Yuli. (*)
