UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga Library (UNAIR) has a twitter account since eight years ago. During that time, UNAIR Library also uses Twitter to serve library users.
As social media, Twitter is considered to have a significant role in spreading information compared to similar media like Facebook, Instagram, Line, and so on. What’s more, Twitter has been widely known and used mainly by millennials. No exception for university library users and the academic community.
In this era, university libraries are always required to fulfill the information needs of their users. Seeing changes in user characteristics, the library needs to study on reaching the user. Responding to this phenomenon, UNAIR D3 Library Lecturer, Dessy Harisanty, S. Sos., M.A. held research to determine the effect on the satisfaction level of Twitter users for university library utilization.
The results showed that social engagement established on Twitter has a dominant influence on library utilization. “After researching at UNAIR library, Twitter user satisfaction affects the level of UNAIR library utilization both partially and simultaneously,” he said.
Twitter is considered to be effectively used by university libraries to disseminate information related to library activities and other relevant information. It also has several advantages, such as mature users, presents serious information, short and dense substance, and the speed of spread in a relatively short time. Besides, Twitter also has a list feature, fast timeline updates, unlimited friendship, and hashtags.
Twitter has the advantage of easy features, dense and massive information and users who are more mature and mature. “Given these advantages, Twitter is appropriate to be used as a medium of information and promotion of institution such as a university library. Especially to provide services that are under the characteristics of people behavior of the majority of teenagers, “he said.
Through Twitter, the university library can also present exciting information so it can also be an entertainment medium for users. (*)
