UNAIR NEWS- Quarter Life Crisis or QLC can trigger anxiety, doubt, and confusion in individuals to determine their direction in life. Therefore, one needs to know himself.

To support this goal, Universitas Airlangga’s Student Executive Board (BEM UNAIR) through the Ministry of Social Affairs (Sosma) has held a webinar entitled “Facing Quarter Life Crisis by Knowing Yourself.” The webinar was part of the “Health for All Sosma” series. All Sosma activities were held virtually on Saturday, September 11, 2021.

On this occasion, Sosma presented three speakers, Afif Kurniawan, M.Psi., Psychologist (Lecturer of the Faculty of Psychology UNAIR), Ni Made Putri Ariyanti, M.Psi., Psychologist (Psychologist Associate at Riliv), and Haydira Prili Ananza (a Psychology student of Universitas Indonesia, and a content creator). They provided tips for dealing with QLC.

Positive thinking

Afif Kurniawan, M.Psi., Psychologist, explained that QLC can be faced with positive thinking. Positive thinking, according to him, is a kind of thinking which then produces peace and happiness. It is done by identifying the reasons for a decision.

Afif also said that when the reasons are identified, we have done positive thinking. “You have then reduced some possibility to experience severe stress because we have identified what the problem is. But if we fail to identify and only dwell on emotions, then we will be more stressed out in the future,” added Afif.

He also explained that everything we do starts from the mind, from a meaning, speech, shown in behavior, then becomes a habit. “So if later on, you want to succeed in facing the Quarter Life Crisis well, then make sure everything starts from the ability to think and make right decisions,” said Afif.

Knowing yourself

According to Ni Made Putri Ariyanti, M.Psi., Psychologist, to deal with QLC, you need to know yourself. “Know yourself with the Johari Window technique, which is to explore yourself,” explained Ni Made. The Johari Window technique can be done through several steps.

The first thing is ‘open self.’ Ni Made explained that we can write anything that relates to ourselves and is known by those around us. “For example, if you like art and other people know it too, just write it,” explained Ni Made.

Next is the ‘hidden self’ related to ourselves, but only ourselves know about it. “For example, a hobby that we like, but other people do not know about,” said Ni Made.

“Then there is the ‘blind self’ or things that you don’t know about yourself, but other people know,” continued Ni Made. Blind self is done by asking questions to the people around us about ourselves.

The last, is the ‘unknown self’. “Something about ourselves that neither we nor anyone else thinks of, but we have it. We can do it by writing it down when we remember it,” said Ni Made, an alumna of the Master’s Program in Clinical Psychology at UNAIR.

Self-love

The final presentation was from Haydira Prili Ananza. QLC can be faced by self-love or loving yourself.

Self-love can be done in four ways, self-acceptance, self-respect, self-care, and self-knowledge.

“Accepting yourself is accepting your strengths and weaknesses,” said Nanza. Because according to her, it is not only our shortcomings that we need to pay attention to but also our strengths.

Next is self-respect. “Respect ourselves, for example, if we fail, don’t blame yourself too much,” explained Nanza.

Regarding taking care of ourselves, Nanza said that it is an effort to better ourselves. “For example, by beautifying yourself, exercising, and so on,” she explained.

Finally, know yourself. “This is not instant, because continuously, we are still in the process of recognizing ourselves because we can change ourselves. It is recommended to write a journal to take notes about ourselves,” concluded Nanza.
