UNAIR NEWS –  Community Service Program (KKN) is a moment for students to engage into the community did not prevent the students of Universitas Airlangga from making achievements. Three students of the Faculty of Dental Medicine (FKG) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) successfully won the National Scientific Meeting literature review competition (TEMILNAS) x OPERCULUM YARSI on Wednesday, January 29, 2022.

They are students from the class of 2019, Sesaria Junita Mega RS, Rizentya Salsabila, and Husniya Juwita Farha. This achievement was very memorable because it was achieved while they were separated in different regions and occupied with various KKN activities.

“I joined KKN program in Surabaya. While two of my teammates are in Lamongan and Probolinggo, therefore, during the preparation process until the presentation, we did it online,” Sesa said on behalf of her team.

Furthermore, Sesa expressed that their literature review work and PowerPoint presentation was completed a few hours before the competition started. We panicked, especially when they only practiced at dawn.

“But, thanks to our supervisor, drg. Azhar, who always provides us support and motivation, we keep on working even though school condition was not possible,” she stated.

Through the help of Imam Safari Azhar, drg., M.Kes., Sp.Pros. as supervising lecturer, they were finally able to reach the maximum result. Although they experienced signal problems due to their remote location, far from the city, the three finally managed it well.

The topic and title of the literature review they submitted also attracted the judges’ attention. In the competition, their work was titled Potential Silver Nanoparticle-Based Local Drug Delivery System as Peri-implantitis Management in the Covid-19 Era.

The topic was chosen because the pandemic treatment of peri-implantitis that requires debridement action and antibiotics turned out to be less effective with limited anti-microbial properties. It makes the patient have to come continuously and increase physical contact.

“Therefore, we propose silver nano as a drug delivery system in charge of delivering drugs. Silver nano encourages penetration to occur faster, on target, and has very high anti-microbial properties,” she explained.

Through this achievement, Sesa said their unyielding character becomes an essential key to achieving success. She encourages students to keep trying because we never know when the last failure leads to success.

Moreover, Sesa also advised students to actively learn from anyone, lecturers, seniors, and friends. “The last one is istiqomah (consistency). Entering a competition can be very time-consuming. Therefore, we must be able to balance the time for competition, lectures, and other activities,” she concluded. (*)
