UNAIR NEWSUNAIR Faculty of Law held a Legal Education Seminar and Educational Network on Tuesday, January 18, 2022. Faculty of Law Dean Iman Prihandono, Ph.D., was present as a speaker to discuss the future of legal education amid the rapid flow of digital world disruptions.

Considering that digitalization amplification will change the movements for devices, resources, and market demand, Iman stated that legal education would metamorphose from a ‘place’ of study to a ‘process’ of study. At this point, legal education will be a place to produce law graduates and an education center that provides upskilling throughout the career. Iman added that this change would lead the legal education from strict to more flexible education following the needs of students.

Law in the future will no longer be a practice but a skill. Therefore, legal learning strategies must further imply a flexibility and agility approach. It means that higher education in law must also provide a curriculum pattern needed for certain functions and assignments,” stated the business and human rights expert.

Iman also explained that not every legal profession needs a bachelor’s degree. Some only need a little common knowledge. They will also take deeper understanding relevant to a certain field of law to strengthen their professional ability in a management project context, data analysis, risk assessment, and technology design.

“Acknowledging that those abilities will rely on digital technology, it should be known that legal understanding must be augmented with understanding about digitalization. From here, a multidisciplinary approach in legal education is a certainty. Law students should also understand things such as the digital economy (NFTs, Blockchain, Cryptocurrency),” he concluded.
