UNAIR NEWS – The growth in technology has made the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) create innovations to renew e-KTP to digital e-KTP. In this regard, Kemendagri did a try-out for digital e-KTP in 58 regencies/ cities since 2021.

Interviewed by UNAIR NEWS team on Monday, January 17, 2022, Universitas Airlangga expert, Badrus Zaman, S.Kom., M.Cs. expressed that the renewal of digital e-KTP is a good innovation from the government. He stated that digital identity is mandatory and is proper to be applied in today’s digital and integrated environment.

This act is in support of the 4.0 and 5.0 eras, where technology is no longer used only to share information but also to use for living lives. In other words, technology is a part of the technology itself,” he stated.

Badrus also said that the digital e-KTP is crucial because it becomes an identity approval for transactions. Therefore, caution for leaks and misuse of data should be put on an early alert.

“Data leaks can happen from the data cycle itself. When storing data, sending data, or when processing data. The technology used certainly can refer to that data cycle. For example, encryption technology, storing, securing, and data integrity,” explained Badrus.

Badrus mentioned three security principles in cybersecurity, namely confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The government must focus on showing those three aspects, from the mechanism side, as well as the technology, for everything to work well.

“The government must make sure data can only be accessed by individuals who have the right to it. The government must also guarantee integrity and quality of the data and ensure that the data is always available,” stated UNAIR’s technology expert.

Badrus also added technology vulnerabilities are not always the cause of data leaks. Individuals as a user also need to enforce regulations related to the protection of personal data. In his opinion, when there is a data leak, the aggrieved party is the owner of that private data.

“The concept of paranoia can be an option applied in the plan of this digital e-KTP realization. Information and application in a cell phone are private; therefore the owner of a cell phone becomes the person fully in charge for information and impact from cell phone usage,” he stated.

He appealed to the public to use double lock for accessing cell phones, such as biometrics or other mechanisms. The use of double authentication is also necessary for every important transaction, for example,to a cell phone number and e-mail.

“Always updating OS or application should also be a consideration. The most important thing is to be careful, don’t easily lend a cell phone to anyone,” he concluded.
