UNAIR NEWS – The newest faculty of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), the Faculty of Advanced Technology and Multidiscipline (FTMM), participated in the implementation of the Independent Campus Program. Among the program activities, the Dean of FTMM UNAIR, Prof. Dr. Dwi Setyawan, S.Si., M.Si., Apt., emphasized that the faculty’s research and community service would focus on renewable energy.

“Research will focus on renewable energy. We aim for that. We want FTMM to become an icon of renewable energy in UNAIR,” he said in an interview on November 5, 2021.

To achieve the goal, at least three integrated activities in the Independent Campus Program have been implemented. UNAIR News Team provided the summary below.

Research

It is undeniable that FTMM is currently working on various research projects with industrial partners. Most of the research focuses on the fields of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence.

The ongoing projects include Solar Power Plants and collaboration with Avian to create paints that can kill the coronavirus. According to the plan, FTMM will expand the scope of renewable energy next year by initiating electric vehicle chargers.

“We got Kedaireka matching funds from the ministry worth 2.1 billion rupiahs. The funds cover not only lecturers’ research, but also our programs for the Independent Campus. Meanwhile, students will be involved in research projects and community services,” said Prof Dwi.

Community services

Research and community service activities of FTMM are closely related. The results of the research are not only published but also implemented in the community.

For example, the Solar Power Plant project is applied in hydroponic farming in Gempol, Pasuruan. The community service activities that have successfully gained the attention of the Regent of Pasuruan were also started from research.

Furthermore, there is also community service regarding the safety of using electricity for farmers in Jombang. Another one is the innovation of the automatic Durian-Cracker Robot in collaboration with De Durian Park.

Many studies conducted by FTMM have also received appreciation in national and international competitions. These achievements certainly raise the pride of the faculty, which has not even been running for two years.

Student exchanges

Although FTMM is the newest faculty, student exchange activities are encouraged at FTMM. Currently, 33 FTMM students are registered to participate in the Satria Data 2021 organized by IPB. Meanwhile, FTMM has accepted two inbound students of Robotics Engineering and Artificial Intelligence.

On the other hand, according to the decree of the Director of Academic Affairs UNAIR, students can participate in the Independent Internship activities if they are at least in the fifth semester. However, the first class of FTMM students has just started to study in the third semester.

FTMM has collaborated with some partners to facilitate the Independent Internship activities. The partners include Pertamina, the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics, Holife Care, PT Wijaya Karya, and De Durian Park educational tours.

The Dean of FTMM hoped that students could provide solutions to problems in the community through the Independent Campus Program. In this regard, FTMM is ready to collaborate with all parties who have the same goal to solve problems in the community.

“It must get support from all parties. The campus is not only an ivory tower but also a tower of fire that illuminates,” he said. (*)
