UNAIR NEWS – Planning a career is one thing that should be done early on. To that end, the Directorate of Career Development, Entrepreneurship Incubation, and Alumni Universitas Airlangga (DPKKA UNAIR) held an Airlangga Career Club webinar titled Step Up Your Career Plan. The event was held virtually on Monday, October 18, 2021.

Presenting Ahmad Musafa as the speaker, the event discussed the steps we can take to plan a career. “Initially, at least we have to know ourselves through self-reflection,” he said.

Ahmad Musafa, known better as MED Musafa said, we have different ways of reflecting on ourselves. According to him, understanding our needs can help us to recognize ourselves through the process of reflection. “Reflect, know your inner value, understand your talents and interests, and think about it as early as possible,” said MED, who is a human resource at Tata Consultancy Services.

After identifying ourselves through the process of reflection, MED recommends that we can set our goal. In goal setting, we can write about the things we want to achieve. Goal setting is one of the keys to success in shaping career planning.

MED suggested that we can set goals through SMART concept. It is an acronym for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timebound.

“Then and the most important thing is to develop a career plan. Because after all, goals without planning will only be hopes,” continued MED.

What is not needed in career planning, according to MED is understanding the current situation of ourselves. We must understand our strengths and weaknesses and have the ability to deal with them. It will help us in self-evaluation and development of career planning.

MED continued, self-branding is something that can be done next. “Create a unique self-identity. It can be achieved through self role and competence,” he said.

Furthermore, when we have a career in a company, we can still plan the next step through an individual development plan. “It is when an employee has joined a company, and they already know their performance. It is related to knowledge, expertise, and ability,” added MED.

Finally, MED said that careers and jobs would continue to develop according to the needs of the times. “Therefore, we must be able to adapt to market needs through career planning steps. We have to make ourselves ready, with our identity, expertise, and competence, and always open to learning,” he concluded.
